I've been told that he would have seen pinned collars, not buttoned ones by a guy with a Polo archive.
This could be the missing link.
But is it a Polo shirt? Or just a sports shirt? How do I know? I can't see the picture!

I can well believe that these were worn for Polo too... But I wouldn't call them a Polo shirt if they were just a general sports shirt...

Agree way back when, sportsmen played multiple sports and drifted between athletics, football, cricket, polo, rugby, etc so certain shirts could be used for a variety of sporting activities. This photograph is dated 27th July 1903. Let's try and find an earlier one than this date.
