Minimalist Ivy Summer

I posted a question on the New England and the T***d thread on Wardrobe, but I thought it better here.

However popular, I cant seem to be comfortable wearing of such things as seersucker, bold madras, or red trousers. On others, I can appreciate the look, but where I live in the midwest, it would appear one is trying too hard, and looking caricature like.

Perhaps my comfort level is more basic in nature? Dare I say more minimalist, commonsense (New England?) take on Americana.

My question is this: For those of you who grew up where these wardrobe items were not worn, what do you remember people wearing in summertime? Shorts or no, polo shirts or poplin buttondowns are fine for casual, but what about dressier occasions?

I have been thinking about an oxford cloth jacket, perhaps linen. May have to invest in some poplin suits, but sportcoat choices would suffice. Very muted madras, such as a blackwatch jacket would be beautiful.

I am asking this because I want ideas based in reality, not some RL ad.  Just trying to get some ideas. Thanks.

Worst case scenario, you can wear the exact same style of suits you wear in the winter, but in a tropical weight. Certain to satisfy the most formal of occasions.

I like the idea of the Black Watch tartan jacket - very versatile.

You could always go with a common or garden navy blazer too.

Re: Minimalist Ivy Summer

All great ideas.

Having evolved from the AAAT site, I tend to associate summer with those other fabrics, as if thats the only way one dresses in warmer months. If I remember back to my youth, it was more softer, lighter weight fabrics. Worn polo shirts, or pinpoint buttondowns instead of OCBD worn under a jacket.

Just need to trust my gut.

Thats why I was hoping for some historical context to right my mind. Tis easy to begin thinking that the world looked like ole Ralphy depicts, or what AAAT says it was like back then. I trust the real people who were there. That is what I enjoy about this board.

BTW, I tried wearing jeans again over the weekend...nope. Just cant do it. Guess societal pressure of seeing everyone in denim caused a momentary lapse in judgement. Not only are khakis more comfortable, but a soft, floppy pare of well worn favorites is much cooler during the summer months.

Re: Minimalist Ivy Summer

I like a tan linen jacket. I would also like to have a navy linen jacket if I could find one with light buttons.  The tan is not a great match for khakis so that is a bit limiting.

In summer I wear a tropical blazer about 70% of the time, the tan linen about 20% and the blue chambray and seersucker each about 5%. I live in the southwest. I'm finding that over time I'm getting more comfortable pushing the envelope a bit.

Re: Minimalist Ivy Summer

Shuman, I haven't worn jeans all summer.  Denim is just unbearable in the NYC heat and humidity.  I'm sure they'll come back out in the fall, though.

I grew up in the midwest, so I get what you're saying.  I do like seersucker and madras jackets, but I tend to go very plain with everything else I'm wearing when I pick one of these.  Otherwise, I lean heavily on the light blue chambray and linen jackets in shades of blue and tan--the tan I wear with gray or white cotton chinos.

Definitely pinpoint over oxford cloth.  There are stretches late in the season when I just can't bear an extra layer and I'll wear a gingham or striped shirt with the sleeves rolled with no jacket or tie, particularly if I'm going to be out running errands in the middle of the day.  Days off I go with short-sleeved BDs, chinos, and Chuck Taylors in off-white.

Summer is tough for the clothes horse.

For work, my Khaki and olive poplin suits are heavily used.

I also picked up a thrifted wool/silk/linen hoodstooth sack coat which has been wonderful to wear in the heat.

For casual, I do like madras shorts with a rolled up OCBD.

Press has a Madras blue button down.  Very light and looks just like a regular shirt.  A real help in the summer is going sans underwear. It works.  I swear.

Re: Minimalist Ivy Summer

Odd that we have both a New England, and Southern threads devoted to the Ivy look at the same time. I guess I embrace the southern stuff more during the heat of summer, then when the leaves begin to fall, I retrench in the basic, New England version.

Re: Minimalist Ivy Summer

I like tan linen with white trousers. I am wearing my light tan linen-silk-wool blend jacket with white cotton trousers at the moment. One of the best looking women in the company complimented me on my attire today, which says something.

Certainly understand about regional differences, Shuman. However, it's too bad that seersucker isn't an option. At least in the East, a 3/2 seersucker jacket goes about anywhere, and doesn't look costumey, as it may in the midwest.

Still have a great JP model from a few summers ago. Works well with OCBD and tie for a lawn party, and a good excuse to wear  your white bucks, at least here.

If 'summer is bad for the clothes horse', spare a thought for the poor goths...
