my uncle who is gay gives me lots of nice used ivy style clothes and has been a big influence in the way i dress. he's not you typical poof party boy but an older guy - think 50s - who has shopped at Brooks and done the gray flannel suit thing his whole life. i know our own uncle Russell had a thread over at AAAT about Gay Trad but you cant search for that over there now. my uncle seems different from all the gay guys i know but is his Ivy-ness unusual? does anyone else know of any Gay - Ivy connections?
This is a bit dangerous, as someone could be offended. However, Mike, your uncle came of age at a time when very few gay people ever came out of the closet.
Therefore it might be a good guess that the ivy style was simply something that he liked, and it had nothing to do with his sexual persuasion.
Mike - I find myself in the odd situation of knowing your Uncle and so from my knowledge of him I'd say that there was no link between his clothes and his sexuality.
In fact his clothing style actually pre-dates his full awareness of his sexuality.
A Gay/Ivy connection would be the "All American Boy" look which was ironic in intent but when you looked at the clothes they were actually rather nice or so I am told. A.A.B. have moved on since then.
The College Boy and City Banker are Gay icons in much the same way that the various icons of The Village People were (Red Indians?). In fact I have a thread which I can't publish which shows a number of depictions of Ivy & Preppy clothing used as 'scene setters' in various pornographic films, mainly Gay.
We may raise our eyebrows at all this and shake our heads, but it does all point to the significance of this style of clothing. The use of Ivy style in pornography is a shorthand for the 'good boy gone bad' it would seem (Judging by the context of the images which have been collected so far). Again we might shake our heads, but the thing to hold on to is that these are the clothes of 'good boys'. That is why they are used to add spice to the graphic, close-up, in-yer-face depictions of 'intimacy' which follow their removal.
What a world!

... I'm waiting to hear from Jeeves on the problem of publishing Ivy Porn Pics. As you'll imagine they will need to be heavily pixilated to keep things clean, but even then they're still filth.
A shame really because there's a great BD roll in one of the shots!

I'm sorry i may not have been clear, i do not think or care if there is a relationship between my uncle being gay and ivy clothing. i'm wondering is there is any specific ivy-gay connection in general. i only mention my uncle because he is the only gay guy i know who likes ivy clothes. sorry if i was unclear -
White polo necks were the famous gay clothing item in the late 1960s.
I am not sure I know of any specific Ivy Shop/ Squire Shop stuff though. Mod was always lampooned as gay in the press anyway.
I just got an image of Julian and Sandy - in full polari mode.
''Oooo 'allo Mr. Horne ! I'm Julian and this is my friend Sandy. How bona to vada your dolly old eke. Welcome to yer actual 'Bona Ivy' -our bijou boutique of all things American. Troll over here and try on a pair of staprest. Has'nt he got lovely lallies Jules !''

Mods as in the ones described in the Bank Holiday seaside riots of 64/65. Tabloids had to provide some background and a few cartoons for the great British public.
Julian & Sandy are two famous radio characters from a classic British radio show from the 60s. It was on at Sunday lunchtime and somehow slipped under the radar. The Beeb still had the ghost of Lord Reith watchful of public morality. Pop music was subversive and limited to a Top Twenty chart show once a week. Hence pirate radio broadcasts from the North Sea to escape the heavy hand of UK legal restrictions.
Julian and Sandy got away with far more than the John Inman character in 'Are you being served' :-

Has anything been said about Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter? Hudson was probably the first guy I saw wearing Pendleton shirts for instance, and Hunter was well into the look, wearing a natural-coloured Harrington and with his hair cut so that he might have been at a Madness concert.
When I lived in Salford, haunting some of the same places around Manchester as Jim, it was all facial hair, Woolrich-style shirts, Levis and boots.
"More Lumber than Jack" my pal Paddy reported after a night with one of them.
Ya gotta love The Boys!
Oh, they looked a right lot of cissy mary's! Paddy should have checked out the heavy leather pub just up from the bus station.
