During my short stay in New York recently, I could not resist doing something I have been doing for many years - dropping into Brooks Brothers. I've always been looked after by a tall African- American gentleman from Mississippi. His name is Tom Davis and he has worked for Brooks for 37 years.
Davis is no ordinary salesman. He wears his old-world air with elegance and his Southern manners disarm even the most disagreeable clients. As always, he was immaculately turned out, in a tweed jacket, corduroy trousers and polished wing tips. He wears the English style with American ease.
He greeted me like a long-lost friend and soon we were deep in conversation about the finer points of the button-down collar. He reminded me it was invented by Brooks for Palm Beach polo players who wanted to stop their collars from flapping while they played. With quiet authority he took me through the process of ordering its special-make shirts and explained that they are made in North Carolina (why does that sound more romantic than Manchester?). From the mischievous twinkle in his eye I could tell that he knew he had me hooked. And I had only come in to browse.
An hour or so later strolling down Madison Avenue, it suddenly struck me that Davis had relieved me of around $600. The man's got class.
"The English style with American ease" - Oddly enough that's what I've just been chatting to Mr. Meyer about on the 'Palm Beach' thread amongst other things.
Funny old world.
Natural shouldered clothing is a beautiful beautiful look. Unfortunately, it isnt as easy to make as people think. It is not just the absence of a shoulder pad. It is not simply the absence of darts or shape. It's a eternally modern, comfortable, universal look. It accomplishes what the drape suit never could, that is to allow you to be appropriately attired and still look individual.
Very first suit I ever owned was a tan poplin suit from Brooks Brothers. Combined with a blue oxford cloth button-down collar shirt, repp tie and their tassel shoes, along with a splash of Lime Lotion, and life just couldn't get any better.
Do Brooks Bros. still make natural shouldered jackets? Is what I see on their website natural shouldered?
^ Very good. I can't afford Stuart so I often forget about them. The Andover Shop should have been mentioned too...
Grayson-- I've dealt with the same guy for BD shirts. Stellar knowledge 'es got.

We've got some photos of J. Simons next door on the 'A visit to J. Simons thread' which is linked under 'The London Scene' thread.
.. Or you could just do 'Search' for it & pull it up from here.
The funniest (& not remotely truthful) take on the shop I've ever heard comes from my my mate Big Jim:
"J. Simons? It's like Neil Simon re-wrote wrote Macbeth - Three old Jews hunched over a pair of Bass Weejuns."
As I say, not remotely true but it's a funny image.
I always just tell people that it smells nice in there.

I'm assuming their button-down collars remain unchanged, no?
