I often go to work without wearing a tie. One collar configuration that works well for me in such cases is a "high" button down with 2 band buttons. The high band brings substance to the collar when worn open-necked, and if the buttonholes are done with care and in a restrained color, they can look swell.
I guess I don't care about the OCBD tradition... why would I?
