I like to praise the best, but it's also fun to question the rest -
I wore a Mercer BD for the first time in a while today. They ain't all that you know.
The other day I wore some Bills. And they really ain't all that in the grand scheme of things either.
Both brands are fine, don't get me wrong. But they just really ain't all that.
How 'bout you? Any brands which you feel fall short of their Internet hype?
J.
This is better:
Shonky - http://www.dbs.id.au/blog/law/shonky.html
Schmutter - http://dictionary.reverso.net/english-definitions/schmutter
I enjoyed the Polari / Yiddish overlap in the online definitions of Schmutter, btw.
Shonky as I know the word in London is just something which is not what it pretends to be. The quality of the item is questioned, but the real point is to question what it is being passed off as.
Bills & Mercers - Yeah, the quality is there. But they remain shonky to me in that their hype exceeds their product. They are not as good as their reputations.
They really ain't all that.

I like your style Russell Street, Telling it how it is !
John Smedley knitwear I feel are over hyped, they do nice knitwear admitted but I find they Snag easily and you really need to wash/dry clean with care otherwise you do not get the lifespan of the product.
For the money they cost their products do not last long.
I tend to go for merino italian knits over J.S. now. Half the money twice the life time.
Also tip for Barracuda Harrington wearers, DO NOT wash them in washing machine as they just get ruined .My wife did that on a black J,Simons purchase last year. and that was the end of that jacket.
I got a couple of PMs telling me that my new Weejuns were shonky this morning so I should leave Bills & Mercer alone!
The thing is I think that the new Weejuns are actually better than their bad reputation would suggest these days. Granted they're not as good as they were, but just how bad they are has been really exaggerated I think by those who like to endlessly go on about how things ain't what they used to be (even if they only discovered this style of dress in 2004).
So I vote for Weejuns as being Shonky in reverse (yknohs?). They're actually better than their Internet reputation, not worse!
