How Jeans saved the sports jacket.

A few years ago the sports jacket looked like it was about to be phased out. Anyone buying tailored clothes, especially custom ones were buying suits. Part of it was the price of clothing and part of it was the elimination of wearing a jacket for those times that you would be socializing. In years past, a jacket would've been de rigueur but not anymore.

Then this trend of wearing a jacket with jeans caught fire. It began with students wearing thrift shop jackets with the sleeves rolled up. They could as often be an orphaned suit jacket as an actual sports jacket.

Then it became mainstream to do this and the look became cool. A friend of mine described it as "Business on top and party below".

I thought this vogue would peter out but it seems to be as strong as ever. Obviously, the nicer  and better fitted the jeans and jacket the more stylish the look and the reverse might be true if you're standing around a keg.

I approve of the look if only because it has rescued the sports jacket from oblivion.

Jeans and a tailored sports jacket is very Jeremy Clarkson. In other words naff.

I think the reason for the revival of sports jackets (if there is a revival) is that the sort of people that used to wear them died off, or chose other types of clothes instead.

In support of my theory I offer :-

1) Dunn & Co. - a shop for pensioners which now gets regular references on ebay. Sellers do not have to carefully remove the label.

2) Class swots do not wear Harris tweed jackets anymore. They have all sorts of anoraks to wear instead.

In all the provincial backwaters it has been my lot in life to inhabit, that probably never went out...

Plain darker jeans and the right jacket (cotton, cord, tweed, on the slouchy side), whyever not?
Canvas or twill jeans in red or white with navy blazer?
Cord jeans and a tweed jacket?

Natural shoulders on the jacket help. Leave the tie at home.

Jeans and sport jackets have limited compatibility, I think, because of few options with shirts to complete the picture.  As much as I've tried, wearing a dress shirt or even sporty shirt and tie with jeans doesn't work, at least not for me, leaving denim shirts, which look too redundant with jeans.  Other options are turtleneck + jacket + jeans and jacket + jeans + dress shirt w/out tie, however, if you like ties, as I do, jeans cause limitations.  A dress shirt and sporty shirt and tie, along with a jacket, work well, IMO, with cords and khakis, and other sporty trousers.

Re: How Jeans saved the sports jacket.

A polo shirt would work under a summer weight sport coat with jeans. Lacoste always offer a large range of colours each season.I'm thinking pastel polo, summer weight sport coat (think John G Hardy Riviera cloth) a pair of crisp jeans and suede driving mocs. Autumn/Winter is a bit trickier.

It's also situational as well. The above would work for those lazy summer days or holiday's in warmer climes or in provincial towns and villages but I could see it not working in a big city like NYC, London, Paris etc. just a bit too casual. However, on the other hand I could see it working in southern Italian Cities.

To be fair, i didnt suggest that jeans were optimal with sports jackets, only that the use of jeans have revived the odd jacket.
