Tho I do recollect hearing tale of some chums at University reading some tome about supposed upper class gents.  I would never myself be involved in such undertakings.

Depends on who's society you are interested in. Gerri Major's Black Society was a good read, Our Kind of People by Lawerence Otis Graham was pretty good. I really enjoyed This Was Harlem: A Cultural Portrait 1900-1950 by Jervis Anderson, I believe Ralph Ellison wrote the foreword.
