Just picking up again, does anyone know much about the to'ing and fro'ing between these shores and those of the USA in terms of style? I mean, was Ivy English in origin, exported, twisted, brought back, given an Anglo twist - or what? Was it the case that the Ivy Shop (to give the very best example) sought out not only American gear but also English gear made for export? I have so little nowadays that is English: Clarks chukka boots, Grenfell coat, Loakes, some Tootal scarves and that's about it (Scottish and Irish I tend to see as almost pure Ivy anyway). Is it seen as cool for a New Yorker to dress like an English gent, something I find impossible because of the Sloane connotations?

The Ivy Shop imported American items from the US & also imported from America UK items made for the US market & brought them back home too.

The Baracuta & some great Northampton made footwear etc.

In fact the English Baracuta is regarded as an American Ivy style item over here now because of this process. It's English, but its fame over here is that it's seen as American.

The roots of American Ivy go back to England & Scotland especially (Tweeds, Brogues, etc). But the cult for American Ivy style in England is all about reimporting those original items once they have been given an American twist. We then twist the items even further by giving them a new meaning which the originals & the American copies at home in America never had before. We make them cool & subcultural.

Very subversive to my mind & also wonderfully convoluted. I tried to write a bit about this subversive element for John Gall the other day & failed miserably.

- An English Tweed jacket in England isn't cool. An American Tweed jacket in America isn't cool (not now the Ivy / Jazz thing is over). But an American Tweed jacket in England is cool. It's given a new meaning and becomes something 'other'.

It's quite a story!

Thanks for that, Russell. I think we all get a tremendous kick out of knowing these styling details and being kind of secretive about them. I've always been much taken with Kevin Rowlands' essay in 'The Look' where he details the 'All-Out American' look circa '68, where the only crossover item seems to have been the G9. A bit later, to my way of thinking, it became more 'used car salesman' with sheepies and crombies and anti-style (because it appealed to the masses on the terraces). I was a skin revivalist in '78 (not 'mod'!), and the gear was functional and strictly non-Ivy in my neck of the woods, and it took me years to abandon absolutely every bit of skin/suede gear I picked up in my early 40s and delve into the more arcane areas before coming up with stuff that suits my age and pocket: Pendleton cardies, Woolrich zipper tops, Brooks topcoats etc. Anybody out there know anything about Don Richards? I have one of their coats - mind-boggling! - looks like you're wearing your dressing gown out!

Well, I don't think there's one like it in the Woolrich catalogue I had from John's. It came from Wild in Nottingham, and I think the owner goes on buying trips to Texas. I bought it a couple of winters ago and out it comes around now. Thick but soft wool, metal zipper running just a few inches from rather a large collar, a subtle red check. Maybe from the 80s. Wild are worth checking out - don't know if they've got a website, though - a lot of emo/skater crap generally but sometimes peacoats and shirt jackets. The staff know nothing about Ivy, though - much like Brooks in Regent Street.
