I think there's a plate in Hardy Amies' 'ABC of Men's Fashion' showing just that: A gingham half-sleeve shirt with a square ended knit tie. Both casual items, so why not.

casual day today:

a pink / white striped 3bd ( tm lewin), a pale gray erino crewneck, dark denim jeans w/ 3/4" turnups, charcoal socks, plain chestnut  brown italian lace-ups, matching belt, beige 4 button (non concealed buttons) short mac, burgundy paisley silk scarf (w/ navy wool lining), a slightly overgrown college boy barnet. luckily off to barbers tomorrow!
