One of the great names in retailing, sadly, no longer...

Oh my gosh: I loved Altman's. Saks on Fifth Avenue has a similar ground floor. But Altman's had the men's stuff on the ground floor. They always had fabulous Christmas windows. I bought my first wool reversible to silk scarf there. I loved Altman's. The store ended up in some trust where they were required to sell the store to remain a charitable trust. I remember the Bankruptcy judge asking: Isn't there anyway to save this store? I have a personal intrerest in the outcome."
There wasn't. The trustees believed in the power of the Going Out of Business Sale.
I remember the Christmas windows of Altmans as if it was yesterday. I remember the bookstore and the Burberry trench coats on the main floor. I do miss Altmans.
