Role of the color black in Ivy Style

I know that according to the "curriculum" black is not a suitable color for a suit.  But then I found this posted on ivy-style.com
http://www.oldmagazinearticles.com/pdf/1953-College-Fashion.pdf

And history trumps all fora.  My question is, what is "tawny-black"?  Is it black with some copper or tan in the weave, because I have some vintage sacks that fit this description.  Note that in the photo on the left the kid is wearing a "tawny black" suit with brown shoes.

Also scroll down in the image to the blurb on the "corduroy study suit"....what the hell?

Or is it Copper or Tan with some Black in the weave?

Actually that is a very nice 'curriculum' busting article - As we all thought over here almost 2 years ago...

A tip of the hat to Brother Bosthist.

A black polo shirt looks good with an olive green corduroy jacket.
