Nice puns too.

The evolution of the capitalist style of life could be easily - and perhaps most tellingly - described in terms of the genesis of the modern Lounge Suit.

"What are you supposed to be, some kind of advertisement?!"

Coolidge's grandfather to Coolidge, age 12, who had appeared before him in printed T-shirt.

Coolidge has never worn a t-shirt for anything but yardwork or squash since.

There is much to support the view that it is clothes that wear us, and not we, them; we may make them take the mould of arm or breast, but they mould our hearts, our brains, our tongues to their liking.

"Hey, whadaya gonna do, nice college boy, eh? Didn't want to get mixed up in the family business, huh? Now you wanna gun down a police captain. Why? Because he slapped ya in the face a little bit? Hah? What do you think this is — the Army, where you shoot 'em a mile away? You've gotta get up close like this and bada-bing. You blow their brains all over your nice Ivy League suit."

Re: Random Clothes Related Quotes...

One of the first things that happened when I began working at Time was that a young man who worked with the personnel department took me to lunch.
"I hope you don't take this personally," he said, "but most of the people here are pretty careful about the kind of clothes they wear.  Why don't you go down to Brooks Brothers and buy yourself a gray flannel suit?"
You too?  I thought.  "When they pay me enought to buy my clothes from Brooks Brothers, I'll do it," I said.
"That's not the way it works.  First you fit in here well, and then you get your raise.  This isn't official--it's just a friendly hint."
"But Brooks Brothers charges something like two hundred dollars for a suit!"
"I'll give you a tip," he said.  "Go to the boys' department.  The same materials cost about half as much there."
"Boys' department!  I weigh more than two hundred pounds!"
"The have clothes for boys of all sizes," he said.

The Clerk in the boys' department at Brooks Brothers did not seem surprised and fitted me quite well with a gray flannell that cost only eighty dollars.  When my friend in the personnel department saw me the next day, he grinned.
"You look better," he said.  "When you get another one, make it a charcoal gray.  You may not believe it, but little things like that are important around here."

Re: Random Clothes Related Quotes...

“Well—upon my soul!” exclaimed Lawrence Lefferts, turning his opera-glass abruptly away from the stage. Lawrence Lefferts was, on the whole, the foremost authority on “form” in New York. He had probably devoted more time than any one else to the study of this intricate and fascinating question; but study alone could not account for his complete and easy competence. One had only to look at him, from the slant of his bald forehead and the curve of his beautiful fair moustache to the long patent-leather feet at the other end of his lean and elegant person, to feel that the knowledge of “form” must be congenital in any one who knew how to wear such good clothes so carelessly and carry such height with so much lounging grace. As a young admirer had once said of him: “If anybody can tell a fellow just when to wear a black tie with evening clothes and when not to, it’s Larry Lefferts.” And on the question of pumps versus patent-leather “Oxfords” his authority had never been disputed.

(Edith Wharton, "The Age of Innocence." )

“You know that saying, 'Caesar's wife is above suspicion'? Well I put an end to all that rubbish!"..”

Re: Random Clothes Related Quotes...

"The last tailor ranking (if you could call it that) was the Mark-Grayson-endorses-Raphael-and-everyone-else-sucks one, not exactly useful."

"I don't really need to hear another rating of you or Raphael."

"Leonard declares himself hors concours and that is fine, seeing a top rating for him or another petulant gripe by a Grayson-type character is like reading criticism of Taillevent, interesting but something that adds luster and does not detract."

"I have a gripe: a lot of people, especially Mark Grayson, discuss their bespoke purchases, but no one but myself and Kai have displayed pictures of them (perhaps a few others if one includes Style Forum). Okay, you want to hide your faces for a variety of bizarre personal and quasi-paranoid reasons, fine. But why can't people display pictures of their clothing? I would love to see fabric choices and cuts."

Amazon.com quote...

"I think I know what the negative reviewer was driving at: I don't want anyone to find out about this great site either, because it is really fabulous and they will ruin it. The fact is, there are certainly some characters on the site, but there are also industry mavens and incredibly knowledgeable dandies (the poster Marc Grayson has to be read to be believed) who spend all their money on clothes and all their time on shopping. I do not, and so I am very happy to accept their sage advice. I have allready tested out some of their suggestions, and I am sorry I did not find this site earlier. The listowner, by the way, is very benign. There are a few flames, but very few: apparently people do not get that worked up about clothes! By the way, the statistic about slowness is accurate: Andy Gilcrest needs to spend less money on John Lobb shoes and save up for a new server!"

"Dear Gentlemen,

When we were debating the merits of tailors before on AAAC and here, discussions were very abstract. The famous Mark Grayson talked about abominations and we all wondered why he could not return to a tailor to get something fixed. But of course, unless a tailor makes most of his garments perfectly the first time, building a wardrobe becomes even more time-consuming than it has to be, and annoying."
David Bresch
