Norman Block/Dunhill Tailors NY

Interesting obit of Norman Block from years back, owner of one of the legendary bespoke tailoring houses in NY, Dunhill.  Not the British Dunhill, the Yiddish Dunhill...

Re: Norman Block/Dunhill Tailors NY

they were a class act. I remember when I worked at Roger Laviale, I was sent over to clean up the swatch books. I could not beleive how dark the store was.

They had a workroom in the basement with some of the best tailors in NYC.  My old Neighbor, Ralph Caprio made the semi custom and some of the RTW items.

ever the salesmen. One of my customers told me a story. He went in to dunhill to have a button replaced on a jacket. As he waited, Norman sold him a Camel hair polo overcoat. Did the customer need the o/c? no but Norman made the sale!

It was a great shop in the classic NYC tradition; rather English-style suits. Had a beautiful hopsack blazer from there.

Egbert here: Dunhill Tailors was the best shop in  NY from the 1940s until they closed in the early 1980s. The song has ended but the melody lingers on.
