Borrowing a concept from FNB:
The style gods have summoned you to a series of events. You are to use ONLY items from your existing wardrobe, but you are allowed to purchase one item prior to each event. Your task is to be the most stylish person in the room, without blowing it and being overdressed or attracting negative attention, or upstaging the centers of attention.
The events are:
1) An afternoon wedding with 50 guests in Southern California. It is April. The couple getting married are old friends, in their late 20s, but you aren't super-close and will only know a few people there. The invites were casual and the reception is being held at a local hall with a DJ.
2) A nightclub in the 5th arrondisement of Paris featuring a small but well known jazz combo. It is October. The show begins at midnight.
3) A business conference social mixer in Chicago. It is June. You are representing an IT company, the conference is mostly engineers and IT execs to whom you want to promote your company.
4) A polo match / picnic lunch in Greenwich, Connecticut. It is September. The US polo team is playing the Jamaican polo team.
Allez cuisine!

Ok I try:
1) 3 button seersucker sack coat, pink 3BD shirt, blue silk hanky with burgundy/white microprints, blue mohair trousers, burgundy/blue pinstripe socks and oxblood Weejuns pennies.
2) Medium/dark grey 3 ply mohair suit (covered buttons, side vents), white linen hanky (2 points), white shirt with collar bar, navy silk knitted tie, navy-sky blue-pale yellow striped socks, sleek black Gravati slipons (or Testoni black basketwave lace-ups); a knee-length off-white Aquascutum mac and a paisley silk scarf.
3) I don't know how hot could be Chicago in June, but I'd go for a beige mohair suit (yes I love mohair:-), white square, white tab collar shirt, pale blue silk tie with small prints, dark grey socks, brown chisel toed Rossetti loafers (unlined).
To be honest, at the moment the beige mohair fabric is still rolled on a shelf inside my wardrobe, waiting to meet the tailor by next spring, and the Marinella pale blue tie will be delivered after the summer I guess...
4) Navy blazer, sack, patched/flapped pockets, white metal buttons (I don't own it yet, but since I've saved on event 1 and 2, I exercise my buy option); blue OC3BD, purple hanky, off-white sta-prest, navy with deep red polka dots socks, black tassel Weejuns.
Cheers,
D.
Beige Mohair is new to me & I love the idea. Why have I never thought of it before? ... ...
Anyway...
1) Medium weight 3 to 2 Navy Sack blazer (It'll come off as soon as we hit the hall), Burgundy slim silk knit tie (It'll come of as soon as we hit the hall), Bean French Blue University stripe OCBD, Khaki Bills sans cuffs worn short, Dusty Pink & Dove Grey Argyles, Scotchgrain Bass beefrolls in that Tan colour that looks much better with a ton of Dark Brown polish on it. I will randomly walk up to people and say 'So just how is John now?'
2) Charcoal Tweed Herringbone Sack! Dark-ish Grey worsted narrow cut trou. cuffed, Grainy Blue Brooks BD, Slim Black knit tie worn to get in then put in pocket, Maybe a white T. under the BD... maybe by Press. Black Penny Weejuns, Dark Charcoal socks. I'll do that trick where you make eye contact, raise your eyebrowns & then motion for people to come over. You can get a lot of free drinks that way...
3) Olive Poplin sack suit. Cordo Cayman IIs, That perfect shade of mid-Grey socks (Oxford Grey..., but Oxford on a misty day...), White OCBD, Silk Repp tie in Burgundy/Bottle Green/Gold. My engaging smile. ;-)
4) Red, Gold & Green Madras half sleeve BD., Slightly frayed Khaki chino shorts, old brown boats, maybe a White T. under the Madras. I will talk with great knowledge about Rum an' Ting. Failing that I know a lot of dirty stories about Ian Flemming, Lord Mountbatten & Noel Coward. Any funny looks I get I will counter by saying 'I'm terribly sorry I'm with the caterers', but I'll say it with such a twinkle in my eye and in such a wonderfully Public School accent that everybody will laugh and love me and buy me drinks.
Allez oop!
