Old Movies and Clothes

I get the Turner movie channel here in Bangkok that has old movies and I have found myself very much enjoying all the old clothes.

As many have noted even workingclass men had great clothes 50+ years ago.

Some of the movies have men wearing ascots in daily wear and they look great - not funny or out of place at all.

Interestingly I remember my father mentioning that a long time ago typically only white cotton pocket squares were worn and sure enough that is what I see in the classic movies.

I wonder when did colorful pocket squares become popular? Anyone know?

Re: Old Movies and Clothes

Chase,

I think Fred Astaire is in a class of his own like Babe Ruth.

I have a monthly TV guide and I will start to look for the movie. I get the Turner movie channel and a MGM channel so the movie is bound to turn up sooner or later.

Does anyone remember David Niven in the old 80 days around the world movie? I say old because I think that it has been remade but I am not sure...

He wears a great white suit - linen? but what is really memorable is his vest which looks like silk - very bright and great look for an adventurer. The movie itself is a little dated in terms of the script and acting but if you have a sense of humor it is still lots of fun.

I am rarely in the countryside on our farm these days but I keep meaning to get a British Indian style pith helmet - not the British African pith helmet. I think that it would be cooler than the traditional Thai straw farming hat which has a very wide brim.

Re: Old Movies and Clothes

FNB,

I don't think that I have a history channel but you have sparked an interest in my getting it to look at old news reels etc. I shall have to look into it.

Also an interesting point about how certain colors look different in the old movies.

I am going to keep an eye open for the old tie prints. As for pocket squares although they may be out there I really have not seen any prints in the old movies. Only white cotton. But I have seen a wide range of sizes from 10" neatly folded ones to large maybe 18' pocket squares flowing out of a pocket.

You can find many of the old shorts on this channel's web guide. They use a lot of them as fillers but some of them can be an hour or so. Great to see what people dressed like when not billed as top stars in a premium production.
