How Much is too much for a necktie?

I spend an average of $75 for a necktie.  Heck, I am not proud, I have bought purple label ties for $40 at Century 21 downtown in New York CIty.

I see many listed on line and in stores for a heck of a lot more. Is there a cross section of price over value? Are there certain brands that should be avoided or ones that pack value into the product over name tag or merchandising appeal?

Personally I'd never spend more than $75 and usually more like $45-50 for a new tie but Ivy stuff is cheaper.

I can't say specifically, however, I have become more than a little jaded when I see stores heavily discounting pricey ties from prestigious brands like Charvet, Luciano Barbera, Drake's, and ohers, and, presumably, still making a profit.

^ Agreed. I've seen Filene's Basement carrying ties from Massismo Bizzochi and others at head-scratchingly low prices. It does make you think...

Then again, I've seen Filene's Basement carrying Borrelli shirts at ridiculously low prices as well and I think it's just a gift from God - those shirts are worth the price even at retail smile

Cheers.

I personally prefer to pay no more than $65-$75 for a silk repp.  that's made in USA or England.  That's the general price at Press, Brooks, Andover, and other places I frequent.  But I'm sure that other ties might deserve to be more expensive.  Like the Atkinsons and whatnot.

I don't pay more that 15 euros now as I have enought ties and because it is just a piece of silk that can be damaged easily

Drakes at 50% off for $125.00 is a pretty good price, isn't it? l was going to get some Friday.

Good neckties in Australia generally start at $250.00 and go up to $750.00 for RTW Stefano Ricci. Crappy `Hugo Boss' are around $140.00.

You guys get everything cheap. You're are all very fortunate.

I have never paid more than $150, have sometimes picked up Borrelli ties for $75.  Median is probably about $100 or so.  There are enough department stores around where I live (Neiman Marcus, Saks, Nordstrom) that I can often find what I want in that $100 price range (admittedly, around seasonal sales, although at times, I will pay full price for something I just have to have, like a cashmere tie from Borrelli) pretty regularly.
