Great stuff Chris. When I bought my first pair of Playboys a couple of years ago, one of my first associations was "Teddy Boys". Not that I was planning to wear 'em like them. These shoes have popped up in many subcultures since, see Quality of Crepes and other threads on here.
Back to this thread: I'm wearing the Sanders "Superbuck" Chukkas. I imagine these are not for wide feet. The somewhat pointed toe acts as a reminder that one should cut toenails with regularity.
^ I like to throw in a Wallabee (low tops preferably).
It doesn't surprise me to find like minded people from another continent and century did so as well. That's a lovely nugget of information, cheers.
I have a pair of Clark's "Desert Treks," sort of bulbous-toed low-tops with a big honking seam running vertically down the front. They are so ugly, but have a certain charm. Good with jeans and a flannel plaid shirt.
Thanks, Tom. Ditto.
Has anyone made any greater attempt to mythologize Clark's than the Wu Tang, the tradliest of all hip-hop collectives (jokes, jokes, jokes)?
As evidence, I offer Raekwon's advice on tricking out your Wallabies:
"Boom, yo I got a crazy idea how to do Clarks now
Check it out, boom, this how you freak em, boom
You go get you go get the cream joints right? Boom
Now now, all you all you dye, is this shit right here
Boom, and this, yaknowhatI'msayin? Any color you want
But it'd be like, blue and cream, yaknowhatI'msayin?"
From Raekwon's Glaciers of Ice off of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.
Of course that is not the only time the Wu has glorified Clark's.
Ghostface Killah:
"Headed to aisle four, damn I got milk on my Clark's
That's what I get, not focusing, from hitting that bar
My mouth dried, need plenty water quick, I feel like a shark
In the aisle, busting them paper towels and wiping my Wally's down"
And of course Method Man:
"Follow me, Wu-Tang gotta be
The best thing since stocks in Clark Wallabees"
Brownshoe, I too have a pair of the immortally ugly Desert Treks. I've even had them re-soled. I love the leather on them and they do look good with jeans. However, my love for unsightly seam waxes and wanes.
late 90's / early 00's wallabees and desert treks used to be sort of a craze among the hip hop crowd over here. wu-tang + late seventies pics explain the connection, finally. back then, i always wondered the almost overnight transition from shelltoe Incontinence pants to clarks among that lot. since, the footwear preference has gone into ugly hi-top nikes in horrid colours, especially among the rap lot. i'fd preferred the clarks way, though or perhaps, the good old sheeltoes, much more an aesthetic sight on the streets than Surgical appliance sexy Rhinestone negligee sex jordans or the like.
big Surgical appliance hater, me. never worn, never will.
