A bit of polish usually does the trick in the UK
Stuck at home due to snow at the moment.
* Why do they not have a change of footwear instead of overshoes ?
I was stuck at home in the snow all day too. Kingston was a ghost town - no buses, trains and 75% of shops shut!

Is sliding the car into a ditch -a euphomism?
I spent my formative years in New England (New Hampshire and Massachusetts mostly) and in all honesty, I think I went into the ditch twice, maybe three times, and nothing catastrophic. The roads stay pretty cleaned up because the local governments spend a fair amount of money on equipment to keep them cleaned up. Its dangerous driving in the middle of a blizzard or ice storm (which I have also done many, many times), but as long as you keep your wits about you, and drive carefully, you can get through it. I did have a first cousin killed on new year's morning over 10 years ago when he ran off the road in a snowstorm.
