A few years ago I discovered cashmere jumpers and their warmness and lightness.
Before, I was wearing polyester or cotton jumpers I was always cold on the arms during the winter in my greasers.
No I have about 12 cashmere jumpers, from light to very heavy (some have a tag price of more than 1 000 euros) and I love them all.
Recently, I picked up 2 cashmere over coats.
One of them is very light, I planed to wear it like a long sport jacket.
I put it today while it was very cold and guess what ?
I wasn't cold. Just a slight chill in the body.
So cashmere over coats are magical too ?

I think cashmere is warmest when close to the body, as with a sweater. Because coats fit more loosely, I find the warmth factor diminishes with cashmere coats. Cashmere coats can be very elegant, though.
Ity is not warmer "in some sense" but just "warmer" as we can only compare 2 fabrics of the same width indeed.
3 cm of polyester will be warmer than 1 mm of cashmere but a 3 cm fabric would be few handy for a scarf
