in case you missed it -- J Press clearance sale

A mixed bag overall but some interesting stuff that I don't remember seeing on the site before.

I think this would look good under a sweater.

Really sharp-looking quilted jacket

Big chunky-soled gun-boats in pebble-grain (they've been listing them forever. Does anyone know who makes their shoes?)

And a toque.

Re: in case you missed it -- J Press clearance sale

Just remembered this post from a while ago - does anyone know how true to size  the Shaggy Dogs are this/last season (ie the ones that are in the sale on the site)?

I have one from a couple of years ago that is a large and still pretty small on me when I take a medium in most other sweaters.

Was thinking of picking up one or two seeing as they are now 1/2 price but don't want to without checking on sizing first.

Cheers

^ I say get your true size.
I'm a small... I bought this season's small, and they got it just about right. Certainly not too small, it's a bit longish even, arms- and bodywise.

I'd buy the tweed coat even if I didn't wear it much.

Does almost everything from Press really look kind of cheap nowadays?

smile   A very jolly thought.

I've seen older versions of the genre and they looked less shiny - More matt & hairy - Maybe it's just Press' photography?

I took a stab at the Guncheck Country 3 piece set.  Hell, for $277.50, why wouldn't you?

What's three-piece about that?  Does it come with trousers?  That looks suspiciously like the "twin set" I bought last year, just a jacket and vest, no trousers.  AQG, did yours come with trousers?

Re: in case you missed it -- J Press clearance sale

I promised an update on the Press guncheck three piece set (http://jpressonline.com/build_popup.php?cat_1=sale&cat_2=sportcoats&cat_3=&name=Guncheck+Country+3-piece+Set&image=J32265I&width=400&height=510 ) that I ordered from the sale.

It arrived this AM.  I like the check rather a lot.  It may (I shall have to rely on our English members) as the sort of loud tweed worn by Americans.  Was it Wodehouse who made that observation?  In any event, it was in Harris Tweed.  I consider this a bonus as it was not billed as such.  It is from Press's mid-range Presstige line.

I was surprised to find the shoulder a little more built than the Ivy/Tradly sorts generally like, though this may just be because of the weight of the fabric and the fact that the check is very bold.  Large scale checks on jackets always seem to emphasize shoulder width.  Otherwise, all of the usual trad bells and whistles liked hooked vents and edge-stitching are present and correct.

The vest is charmingly archaic in that it is rather short in the body.  It reminds me very much of the vests we see in old photographs that seem to stop right at the waist.

And now, about the identity of the third piece.  It is (drumroll) a complete mystery.  Well, not really.  A quick call to Press confirmed that the internet description was erroneous and the set is, in fact, two piece.  I thought about haggling with them to see whether they couldn't come up with enough fabric for a tweed thong, but decided this was probably inconsistent with the JPress sense of humor.  While a small disappointment, this was not entirely unexpected given the price.  So, any suggestions for trousers for this tradass ensemble?

I'm going to keep it.  Hell, for the price the jacket alone was a good buy and the vest is gravy.  There's a blue overcheck in the coat that will go well with jeans for casual days and I can wear the vest with one or two other jackets as well.

Re: in case you missed it -- J Press clearance sale

Glad to hear the three-piece/two-piece worked out.

AQG, you should collaborate with the costume department over at Gossip Girl on your harris tweed thong idea, given how they managed to make that J Press scarf made from an ensemble of unsold polka-dot ties into a fashion must-have. The protagonist could reveal himself in the opener of the next season in said thong, thus revealing that he bleeds preppiness (couldn't the resulting tweed chafing be marks of character?).

AQG X J Press? An idea anyway.

Best.
