I'm a bit previous on this one as the book isn't published until 1 October, but hey, indulge me, I'm a bit excited, I work for the publisher, Graham's a friend, I love his work, I'm hip to the whole concept here : 'Max and the Lost Note' is an illustrated picture book, story and artwork by Mr.Marsh, and it's simplest the hippest children's book I've seen (and there's a lot of competition actually, speaking as someone in the biz). Max is a cat who wears sack suits, button-down shirts, red socks with his Alden cordovan penny loafers, red harrington jackets...all of the details are present and correct as you'd expect from GM. His plays the piano and is writing a note when he loses a note and can't finish the tune. He goes in search of the lost note and encounters a litany of feline hipsters : Long Tall Dexter, The Funky Felines, modern jazz trio The 3 Cats, and others. It is knowing yet fun, loaded with insider in-jokes and puns. I love it. It is a children's book but the market is more than that and anyone with a feel for classic mid-century illustration in the vein of David Stone Martin, Andy Warhol and Ben Shahn will respond to this work. Graham is in love with classic American clothing and culture and this book is a tribute to the Golden Age, the perfect synthesis of the Ivy style and a contemporary hip London sensibility. There's a bit more info on the publisher's website, a link to which is below. You can pre-order now from here, or it will be available at shops and galleries across London and beyond. Or there's always Amazon I guess, if you have to....

Thanks for listing. I'm always at a loss as to what to get the girlfriend's nephew. He's too young for video games and comics. We did get him a pair of patch madras shorts and a golf shirt w/ skull & crossbones for his last birthday, which managed to offend one of the distant aunts. Anyway, will pick this one up for the next birthday do.
Greetings all. That sounds lovely. Check out 'An A-Z of Jazz Portraits' by Paul Rogers. A really beautiful picture book with all the greats and poetry by Wynton Marsalis.
Also, 'Hot Jazz Special' by Jonny Hannah. I'm sure all posters here will find something to appreciate with these two. Be seeing you.
Jonny Hannah is indeed a lovely cat and a J.Simons customer.
In recent years there has been a spate of fabulous new illustrators producing work which tips a hat to the aesthetic in which we all find pleasure.
I can also heartily recommend 'Iggy Peck Architect', though my 4 year old daughter finds it boring. I think these books are really for the parents...
So very true GG! My son wasn't the slightest bit interested in his dad's copy of the Goldilocks book nor the story within. Still on my book shelf looking brand new.

A nice quick exchange this morning with one of our esteemed number who has seen the original artwork from the publishers & all the details are really spot-on, he reports.
- Really looking forward to this one.
... Makes me think of those cartoon Japanese Ivy books a bit the more I look at the artwork, you know the ones?
I love all that.
Jim
These are the Japanese Ivy books I'm thinking of:

I wouldn't mind the Male one just for fun meself!
^ Ummmmm..... Could anyone help me buy this please?
I'm too dumb.
I'll see you right for your bother. PM?
Thanks -
Jim
RS, I'm with you on that book, which I've been obsessing over ever since I first saw that Retro To Go post. The art seems to be done by the guy who does a lot of the artwork for Van ("FOR THE YOUNG AND THE YOUNG-AT-HEART"). What doesn't help matters is that the books seems to be out of print, meaning that you are buying off of an Amazon Z-Shop retailer for further complications.

Are there scans out there which we could put up here?
Oh those Ivy books! I've been obsessing about those too! I love the wrap-around 'clothes on/clothes off' book jackets. A friend of mine in Toronto is supposed to be ordering a copy of both books for me. He's found them on some Japanese website (but U.S. based I think??) that has them in stock at U.S. $23 a piece. I'm taking their availability with a pinch of salt though as I'm sure that they are well out of print by now but you never know. The retailer will only ship to the U.S, Canada & Japan.

Yeh yeh a bit previous I realise but just to let anyone who's interested know that Graham's book can also now be pre-ordered from Amazon UK (and probably Amazon US though I haven't yet checked). Link is :

and Graham currently has a few other forks in the fire which, should they bare fruit, will offer much pleasure to those of us with the Ivy bug.

Good News!
