Re: Hands Off Chensvold !!!

In all fairness, I don't think ACL is really trying to be the king of ivy. I think he's interested in a broad range of things, ivy being one but just one of them. He openly blogs on a lot of stuff a lot of people in the ivy/trad world disagree w/. In fact, I think the trad and ivy sorts were likely of one mind on that Timex watch post he did.

Also, I can't really blame him for not wanting to get involved in the great Forum wars. I think he enjoys running a blog and generally getting along with people. His blog isn't exactly in the "let's call out other's bull-shit but don't call me on mine" game. In fact, I can't really think of him ever having taken a real "I'm the expert on this one" stance. Just my opinion, but nothing wrong w/ that.

All of which isn't to say that some of his posts don't deserve a bit of mocking now and again; it's more to say that he's on his own trip which isn't the same trip a lot of us are on about here.

Re: Hands Off Chensvold !!!

I agree re:ACL. I find (most of) it an interesting read and I enjoy his angle on things. I guess a lot of that is me looking at it through British eyes. I don't find it particularly thought provoking or confrontational - or inspirational even, but I don't mean that as a critisism of him or his style. Far from it, I like the site's pretty easy going 'diary style' tone. I've never thought about it along Ivy lines although some pieces do touch on that (our?) world. The ACL view takes in a lot more in fairness. Now admitedly some of the men's fashion comment does make me chuckle but I know it's not aimed at people like me. His writing never makes my blood boil (a rare occurence these days when anger comes to me too easily) unlike with some other would be subcultural style gurus. I think we are bloody lucky here - there are some really interesting participants on 'Talk Ivy' and it gets better all the time. A definite doffing of the cap here to brother Weejun and his new site. A winner.

Re: Hands Off Chensvold !!!

I suspect I wrote the initial post badly. I do that. ACL I only meant to mention as an aside as being younger than I thought he was just like Chensvold is. ACL is fine - A careerist like Chensvold is & not a hobbyist like me.
I hope all these people can make their dreams come true on the internet.
I suspect that being older I find all this aspiration a bit alien to my way of thinking. Chens being so keen to make a name for himself that he'd do a blog on anything just to cash-in seems very odd to me, but clearly not to him.
I'm only here out of enthusiasm. He's here to make his name as a writer.
Agreed on Mr. Weejun's excellent blog - Far more my style, as are certain of the other 'Trad' blogs. I just like my fellow enthusiasts I guess, simple as that. All the aspirational guys leave me cold. Not just Chens, but the AAAT 'lifestyle' crowd too. I find their motives 'impure' from my way of thinking.

Peace, Tweed, Good Times -

Jim

Re: Hands Off Chensvold !!!

Glad that The Weejun is gaining respect in these quarters, thanks to everyone who's been commenting on the site and here, too.

As I'm sure anyone call tell my reasons are purely personal, finding a bunch of other people who like similar stuff inspired me that it may be fun to tell the stories and talk about the clothes, music etc.

It wouldn't occur to me to try to monetise the blog - there's no point really how much money are we talking about anyway? peanuts for a niche like ours. No, better to be free to do your own thing.

That's not to say I'm unhappy that the strange one has linked to The Weejun, as it's bringing a lot of traffic and people make their own minds up both about his site and anywhere else it takes them. I actually found this forum after finding Ivy style by accident whilst searching online, and hopefully others will do the same and make their own minds up. Once found, this site became my 'sticky' content, not the source of the link.

Having said all that I am toying with the idea of merchandising on the Weejun.

Before you all shout WHAAAAT??!! I mean real merchandise, not key rings and mugs.

I am making some tentative enquiries into some one off shoe production specials on the basis of I like it, there might just be enough people to buy enough for a factory to take a special order of a style, leather colour etc. I don't yet know whether it will work but I thought it could be worthwhile trying bearing in mind a lifetime of contacts I have in the field.

Re: Hands Off Chensvold !!!

... And the thought now occurs that to criticise Ivy Style as being the work of who it is, motivated by what motivates him, is to miss the point.
We are supposed to admire the production of the blog and the writing therein. That is the point of it.
It's an exericise in plucking a topic out of the air & then writing about it.
Chenvold said to me back when I was involved with him that his credibility wasn't the point, I was supposed to provide the credibility. And now I guess our brother BoO provides the credibility.

So really the blog isn't actually about Ivy at all. It's just an exercise in the art of blogging. A shop window for Chensvold's blogging skills. And I actually rather like how abstract that is I must say.

So let there be no more talk of how Chensvold knows and cares so little about Ivy. He isn't there to talk about Ivy. He's just there to blog.

I wonder what topic he'll blog on next? It could be anything.

I shall go and read The Weejun now I think... Real knowledge, real taste, real passion, and all from a real person - All the things I like which "Ivy-Style" can't deliver.

Re: Hands Off Chensvold !!!

You're right Russell, I think he's working hard at something.

He dropped me an odd email last night referring to some kind of online war but I was a bit confused. I won't post his message here because that's not fair as he sent it privately the Weejun's email address, but I will post my reply as I wrote it and I give myself permission.

Responding to MSg from Ivy Style:

hi Christian

Thanks for your message. I'm not really into the whole argument about which site/person/style is best/phoney or whatever.

I do appreciate your link which is most welcome even though it has the amusing title.

At 43 I guess that I am middle aged but a mod? that's hilarious. Americans just don't get UK tribal fashion and that having admitted to have declared myself one at aged 14 for 6 months is more of an embarrassing admission of the silliness of tribal youth fashions (recognisable by any other British person of any age) than any statement of modern day intent.

We once had a Chancellor of the Exchequer (in charge of the Treasury) in the UK called Dennis Healey. Somebody asked him to explain how come he'd been in the Communist party in the 50s. He countered by saying "Well, I also believed in Father Christmas once too".

There is a real cliche that Americans don't get irony but sometimes it is all too true.

Fetishist? Yes I suppose I would have to admit to that, in a style fetish kind of way of course. I can't say that I like other people's feet in any way at all, except perhaps for Mrs Weejun.

Anyway, you are always welcome as a reader of The Weejun and reciprocal links may well be forthcoming as a small 'thank you'

Best

The Weejun

Re: Hands Off Chensvold !!!

Ahhhh - So you've had The Chensvold Treatment eh?

There are so many emails from him flying around just now so don't feel alone. He really is killing himself to be the King of Ivy. Can't say I've seen it working yet but I'm watching. Popcorn, anyone?

I shan't tell you what The Torch Society wrote back to him, but here's a hint: They said no.

Re: Hands Off Chensvold !!!

... I'm very interested that Christian seems to be looking for a foothold into the Anglo Ivy scene, but has also dropped the J. Simons link from his blog - And I still don't have the story behind him doing that btw, but I've asked.

This is another one to watch. Is there any English Ivy fan who'll touch him out there now?

... Maybe they should.

He's trying to rip off Ivy so why not rip him off back?

And yet I'm thinking that our guys won't quite go for that. Just a hunch. Let's watch.
