Weejun's post on Bush Jr.'s self-conscious rejection of loafers in favour of cowboy boots (http://www.filmnoirbuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=80273#p80273) reminded me of Bush's oft-quoted attack on Bill Clinton's support base (being trial lawyers who have the good sense to wear tasseled loafers).
Anyway, in trying to find Bush's precise quote (the subject line of this topic), I found two articles of interest.
Boyer, G. Bruce. "Tale of the Tenacious Tassel: With Its 50th Anniversary, a Classic Shoe Proves It's Not Light in the Loafers." Cigar Aficionado.

Lewis, Neil A. "The Politicization of Tasseled Loafers." New York Times.

And of further interest on the political implications of shoes, a post by FNB contributor Admiral Cod that quotes the above-mentioned article.
