London Fog Maincoat sizes - any tips?

I got such a good response from the post about wash or dry clean the old G9s that I thought I would pose another question here that may help me to save making a dumb purchase on Ebay.

I was chatting to Russell Street about how hard it is to find certain items over the years (pre ebay) even if you wanted them. I never managed to find a London Fog raincoat with zip out furry lining in my size in the glory days of FLIP.

Been looking on ebay but wanted some advice from anyone who has one on the sizing.

The Weejun is 6ft 2 and slim jim, and not really into oversized and am looking for the trimmest fit that doesn't look stupid. For example in the G9s I wear a 40 to get the slimmer less blousy profile, but in a sports jacket I usually have to go for a 42 to get the shoulders and sleeve length.

The good news is that there are tons of these London Fogs on US Ebay (ouch for postal costs though), but the actual sizes are generous even by the 'standard' rules. I've been looking at 40R size, but even they have a 48 chest in reality and I would like to be able to wear it with lining but just a roll neck or something.

I was thinking maybe a 38 L might have enough sleeve length and coat length (don't want it too long anyway) to do the trick?

Let me know how your London Fogs size up...

I'll measure mine up when I get home this evening and pm you with the details. I dare say there's quite a discrepancy between the label size and the actual chest size.

Re: London Fog Maincoat sizes - any tips?

On average I'll usually take a 42" chest - though I have coats and jackets that are 40" and 44". I'm quite a bit shorter than you at 5ft 8" and around an average build I'd say. Certainly not slim anymore! Off the top of my head I can't recall the sizing for that London Fog coat though I do remember being able to pick the best from around 4 on the rack! The good old days of vintage American stuff in relative abundance. Picked it up in Bristol in the June of 1988. Remember it well as it was my first salary cheque - after a year of skiving having left Art College during the previous summer.

Chris_H bought modern London Fog last year - Worth a PM?

I'll go look at mine from Flip & report back.

Excellent, nice feedback guys. I can feel a purchase a'comin' on

That's the great thing about 'our kind of style' to misquote David Jacobs. It doesn't matter if you things off season, you know that next year or even five years later you will dig them out and re-appraise.

I've just dug out some deadstock Barker's Lazy Bee's that I've had for at least 10 years and worn twice. Suddenly, dark blue suede half chukkas are looking interesting again.

Sorry - Don't know what proper label size my two are. They're vintage & I can measure them up. Any use?
I'm a 38R and they're a nice fit for layering whatever they are. Maybe just ever so slightly generous.

Thanks Chris & Jim

I think I may risk it for a 38L. I can always ebay it if it's no good.

Re: London Fog Maincoat sizes - any tips?

Here's an example of an ebay sellers measurement for a London Fog maincoat:

Measurements:
Pit to Hem 32"
Shoulder to Hem 43"
Shoulder to Shoulder 21"
Back of Collar to Hem 45"
Pit to Pit 52"

This is for a 40R !!

FIFTY TWO inches on the chest????

Re: London Fog Maincoat sizes - any tips?

Interesting 1966 - these are the shoe version rather than my low chukkas, not seen those before. Very nice

Chris H - thanks the sizing - what about the all important sleeve length? I wonder if you could measure from collar to the cuff - i think the inside arm seam size from the pit is probably a bit misleading  on a coat made to fit over layers?

I am thinking size 40 R again...

Re: London Fog Maincoat sizes - any tips?

Thanks Chris. Your measurement would work out for me too. Now I'm even more confused between 40R and 40S - I don't expect a super slim fit but not a really baggy size either.

The postage from US for the heavier winter lined models is a bit steep too.

Re: London Fog Maincoat sizes - any tips?

FWIW, I think that every vintage London Fog mac that I've ever come across has had a semi-raglan sleeve. I always had the impression that was a 60's 'modernization' of the full raglan sleeve. I've recently acquired examples of Vista, Alligator, WestTex and (made for the USA) Baracuta fly-fronted macs. All are circa mid 60's and all have the sleeve inset at the front with raglan at the rear.

Re: London Fog Maincoat sizes - any tips?

Thanks for all the tips - i ended picking one up on US ebay today £5 plus shipping - size 40R. looks like great condition as the owner lives in Florida and therefore never wore it.

Will post a report on the The Weejun when it arrives.

Picked up some cracking FLorsheim Imperial long wings last night too - in rare chocolate brown grain. Pic on The Weejun in the morning.

Those Florsheim Imperials you posted on your blog look terrific.  I bought a pair of the modern ones last year and they are perhaps the least comfortable shoe I own - agony.  Any thoughts on the AE MacNeil vs Alden - would rather not spend the extra $$$........
