Partly for the benefit of our American friends, I've been surprised to read, after the Obama-Brown love-in, that Brown is pro-American in a 'beacon on a hill' sense. Labour and Conservative politicians in the UK tend to be sniffy, especially about Republicans. Of course they thought JFK had a solar ringpiece, and they adored Clinton in spite of his being slime, but there you go...
Lots of kids grew up in the 50s and 60s just like me, in households where Sinatra and Tony Bennett were on the radiogram, Bugs Bunny and John Wayne were on TV, and DC and Marvel Comics were by the side of the bed. In short, we were discovering American culture in a big way. I keep harping on this, but wanting to dress like an American is a way of saying thanks - for almost everything.
Remember the stick you got in the "Right On" 80's for having a thing about America? I had endless conversations about how the culture and the politics could be separated if you were just into style...
Ahhhh - Those little American comics with Ads for "Sea Monkeys"! 'Bewitched' on the Telly... And even my Ma was into Peyton Place (which I just about remember in B&W) & The Andy Williams Show too ('Milk & Cookies!')... Then being got out of bed to see the men on the Moon in '69...
The US just seemed to be this really amazing place.
... But, oh! the snobbery in England about the US. Most unfair.
Those adverts were great, Jim! You could buy the kids a toy nuclear submarine or a false beard to wear on your first date or for a job interview - no kidding! I'm so into it all that last year I bought an old Barry Goldwater tie-clip - from the 64 election. Very few people know or care - but I do!
And then there were all those bonkers Ads in the Yank men's mags from when we were older - A Black Beefroll Loafer with 'Be 2" taller' written over it to flog some kind of insoles or that one that went 'Stop persperation for up to two weeks' with a guy sticking some gizmo up his armpit.
Fascinating, other worldly stuff.
We used to wonder what happened when the 3 months were up (thanks for the correction) - Did three months worth of sweat then all come out at once on the stroke of midnight?
GQ was great back then: "Elements of style" on the Weejun, the knit tie, the Brooks Tweed? Lovely stuff.
