espresso : Caffe` Sant'Eustachio, Piazza Sant'Eustachio 82 (in the heart of the Centro Storico, near Pantheon/Piazza Navona etc). The ultimate coffee experience, period. Hubert Swaine's favourite where most of his major works have been conceived or actually composed. Ask for a 'Gran Caffe`' and prepare to be astounded.

pizza : Da Baffetto, Via del Governo Vecchio 114. Again, this is right in the middle of it all. There will be a queue because it is fantastic and worth waiting several hungry hours for. Roman pizza is the best - no crust, wood-fired oven, amazing flavours from minimal ingredients - and this is the best pizza in Rome.

ice cream : Il Gelato di San Crispino, Via della Panetteria 42. Down a backstreet near the Trevi Fountain. Completely natural pure flavours. Ice cream that expresses the soul of Italy in all of its glorious clarity.

clothes : look for the little dusty shops often run by old men which will inevitably have a pair of Clarks Desert Boots in tobacco brown, a range of shirts in luxurious cloths all in variations on blue, a beautiful tan leather satchel and an olive knitted tie in the window. There are a number of them, all, miraculously, right in the middle of town. The little streets between Piazza Navona, Pantheon and Campo dei Fiori reveal many gems.

Yeah, get off the beaten track in Rome or Venice, you'll be rewarded.  Little shop near the cathedral church selling original film stuff:  Fellini etc.  Get down to Trastevere, too.
