Oxford cloth

Do oxfords need to have a button down collar? What is the feeling about double cuffs on an oxford shirt?

Re: Oxford cloth

I have an OTR Charvet oxfort shirt (yellow w/ white stripes) which has a straight, stiff-ish  collar, no buttons.  Might not be trad, but it sits really well I think.  In fact, as much as I like the idea of the relaxed button down, I often find that they don't always sit well.

Re: Oxford cloth

I'd consider getting a proper oxford cloth shirt with french cuffs and straight collar.  There are some older adds we posted here.  Eddie Jacobs' store comes to mind.

I don't care for the Royal oxford.  But I remember my old spiritual-sartorial mentor Style Student did or does.

I'd consider pinpoint for the old french/non BD collar as the Uncle above suggests.

But using the rougher material with the more formal cut makes for something interesting.  Tres tradique.

Re: Oxford cloth

I have a blue royal oxford spread collar from O'Connell's that I am quite fond of. Royal oxford is a beautiful material which has an excellent sheen. It is certainly a pleasant contrast to a nice beefy oxford.

Re: Oxford cloth

Dear old Ben Sherman used to have some great oxford cloths.

His were mostly poly cotton permanent press though.

That said, they wore forever and did not fray like Marks & Sparks oxford cloth seems to.

Another positive was that they had some great stripes - not just the boring university stripe that forums go on about but some really great blue shirts with all manner of multi stripes. Just a shame that he went down the slim fit route and sewed up the box pleat.

Re: Oxford cloth

I'm with horace, I don't like royal oxford. I don't like pin point either, except for this so callled "summer pin point from Acorn fabrics which is like oxford-lite.

I also think oxford cloth can be made with any sort of collar and cuffs you like.

Re: Oxford cloth

It shows how uncouth I am that I find Pinpoint & Royal too refined for my tastes!

But then again I am a Trad.. wink
