I haven't wore boat shoes since 81 when I had a pair that I used to wear to Wigan Casino after me Clarks Polyveldts had dropped off the soul fashion scale! Never again I vowed.
Where does everyone else stand on the boatshoe :
^ = thumbs up
v = thumbs down
Great link! This is the iWorld of the Chensvolds.
I'm gonna pretend that none of this exists (which it doesn't) & ring up John Gall for a drink.
v, but only for their sheer ubiquity and the tendency of their wearers to drape sweaters over their shoulders. A plainish pair in dark brown or navy, I could see the appeal.
But man I loved my Polyveldts.
I still own the uppers to my Polveldts....the soles long since disintegrated, there in a bag somewhere in the loft. I'd forgotten about that, a little bit of my sadness shared!
Don't they tend to be worn by lads who kind of wear 'The Look' but don't know they're doing it, what it's all about, or care less? Moose is right: it's a bit more continental than Ivy: that coffee culture look that seems so right in Brindisi (great-looking women, too) but a bit daft in Derby. Too much RL to go with them, too, and no conception that the polo player is held in low esteem and has been for years. Next day they're in Hackett. Rugby shirts abound, too - even the ones Duck Head used to make were nasty - in my estimation at least. But mucky, cracked white Sebago are okay by me, just as mucky white bucks do the business.
Oh, yeah, and Timberland were great twenty years ago. I guess they count?
V
I'd like some flat rubber soled Blucher Mocs though. Perhaps some Beans.

Big ^.
I put mine away for the winter but they'll be coming out soon if T.O. can make up its mind on the weather. The days are starting to warm up but the nights still feel winterish. I'm not much for wearing 'em w/ socks so I'd rather wait until I know the weather will be warm. Then, I'll alternate b/w the blue w/ white soles and the brown with black soles.
1966, good idea on the bluchers. I'm a big fan of my Quoddy's. Great shoes. The LL Bean's look nice too but I've heard that quality is questionable. That said, a pair of Blucher's may not be the shoe to drop a lot on. Egadfly posted a nice alternative to these two a while ago but I can't remember what the brand was.
Thumbs WAY DOWN on boat shoes
vile ugly things they are
It's funny to see everyone jumping on the quoddy/sperry bandwagon.....and even funnier to see the monstrous creations to meet the trend, like Boat Shoe boots
^
Hard enough to find staff at the best of times dammit, let alone a chap who understands the simple differences between loafers, moccasins and bluchers.
I can sympathise.

The shoes of my sainted grandmother!
Toodle pip!
I like them for when I'm feeling particularly preppy--nice with that "crew on crew" look with a navy cotton sweater, white t-shirt, and khakis.
Also good with jeans, surcingle belt and a bd shirt for the classic 80s OPH look, which, for all scorn it draws, is pretty good in my book.
Boat shoes are fine even though I usually wear Camp Mocs or Blucher Mocs instead. I think they have their place. Another alternative to the LL Bean Blucher is the Bass one. Pretty much the same thing. Quality is about what I would expect out of this sort of shoe.
well put scarlet- Im not a "sailor"(although very much surrounded by them on this island!)so it seems fraudulent .perfectly happy w/Bean camp or Blucher-might even try the Bass. Quoddy ,although I am sure of great quality is rather upmarket.
Like it or not, they have taken over from loafers for many occasions.
They have similarities but are easier maintenance and cheaper
i like wearing a plain brown pair(white soles) with a pair of jeans, no socks
bought a new pair today in fact, so i'm gonna wear 'em in and make it look like a actually do things.
they're pretty in too which is always a plus for me.
