Alex makes yet another convincing point.
To try too hard, to draw too much attention to appearance (let's say) is wearing. Big mistake to pretend to have too much knowledge of anything. I well remember getting into a cab once and being asked by the driver did I like Thomas Mann? Life is full of surprises. I could have snobbishly written him off as a 'Sun' reader. You live and learn.
'Russell Street' is modest, gentle, relaxed, informative, willing to share. And that's good enough for me.

Fellers, whatever happened to hands across the ocean? I'd give my right arm to find out at first hand if AQG is right about what's going on over there. If he is, then it could very well be beneficial to all of us - especially if Press is the new Gap and Paul Stuart has gone Euro-wards.
You know what's not Curriculum, not iGent, actually not based on the internet at all?
Arther Noble circa 2001:
"Not a pleat in the store, sir."
later:
"Regular big ole cuffs for you, sir?"
Sure, all that came later is fake. Fine. But what's not fake is that fact that in two hour's time and with a few thousand dollars, from 18th and L to Connecticut and M, I make you into the best looking Trad around.

I mean, call it what you like. I call it "Traditional American". Others call it TNSIL. Others Trad and others Ivy.
When I first popped up around here, this is what I said it was. And it still is:
The natural shouldered, darless jacket.
The button down collar.
The striped tie.
The loafer.
The love of blazer and khakis.
Dressing down business wear and dressing up casual wear.
In America, this IS what it IS. Call it whatever you like.

We're always going to call it Ivy and that's all there is to it. I go with Graham Marsh and the David's/Austin's/Clothesville heritage on this. I can do no other, partly through ignorance, partly through being English.
Actually, could we encourage Style Councillor to come in on this one?
Some time ago, Brother Shuman started a thread over in Andyland asking, in effect, whether it would matter at all if Harris were a troll. Unsurprisingly, he was banned for his troubles, but his point was the right one: the fact is, if Harris were revealed tomorrow to have been pimply-faced Mancunian teen, not a single Shetland would disappear from my closet, my khakis would retain their cuffs, my collars would still roll, and my cordovan Aldens would continue their gradual process toward gaining the coveted patina that my dad's Aldens always had.
Whether Trad was trolled into being and whether others were brought in unaware of the joke is an interesting but largely irrelevant question. I like and respect certain posters here for their depth of knowledge, and I appreciate FNB's light hand in running the show. But to be ceaselessly lectured on one's lack of suss and failure to live up to someone's Ivy ideals ... well, it's a bit rich.
Cordially,
EGF
