isn't also the way people have come to this style? in the UK it's more likely to be from music, film stars or youth subcultures, whereas in the US there's the whole Trad angle, i.e the clothes were around and people have made a decision to be more 'traditional' in their own dress for whatever reason

i'd certainly be interested to read about how all the US posters here got interested in clothes
