It seems to have found popularity around 1960, amongst American gentlemen on vacation. Same kind of appeal as the Tiki motif or Hawaiian shirt, I suppose. Something tells me they found it all a bit daring, like wearing plaid shorts in the street. Sorry I'm a complete incompetent when it comes to posting illustrations, but I expect someone somewhere will offer some especially grisly specimen...
Ah Tiki, now you're talking. Much favoured by old jazzers and coffee bar poets. The whole art form has become a cult in it's self. Soon as the sun comes out...
Now this is where we need Lloyd Johnson, to add another dimension. A genuine modernist. Come on over from MySpace, Lloyd!
You've just reminded me, B, that I used to have a Tiki shirt - relatively subdued, too. Now whatever happened to that?
You have just remined me of Johnson's Tiki/Beatnik collection. A couple of the shirts were fantastic. I loved Johnsons, they played a big part in my formative style years.
