No one, as far as I know (which ain't saying much), makes the right shade of
yellow in an oxford cloth shirt anymore.
Brooks used to do it well -- and right now they've got too different shades in their
Supima made in the USA OCBD. But neither really hits the mark, though one is
closer than the other.
Does anyone have an opinion on who's making the best RTW yellow OCBD. Or
what cloth co. makes the best oxford (not pinpoint!) cotton fabric in yellow?
When you say yellow, do you mean that orangey-pink "peach" color that BB used to do, or the soft buttery yellow? Ive seen offerings by Acorn fabrics that are closest to my eye to the traditional American colorings.
Horace, I feel your pain. The search for a yellow has almost lead me to order my first mercer. Take a look at their site. I have to pay an extra $10 for long so I've passed so far.
I vote Mercer too.
LL Bean also have their moments from time to time although the shirt (while still good) is an entirely different kettle of fish in terms of construction, fabric, and, of course, price.
Brooks is too vivid.
Press is slightly too pale.
Landsend is a different colour every season - usually wrong.
Yellow has to be THE hardest 'Trad' colour to get right I think.
Pink also has its problems...
Back when BD Baggies did proper sizes (not S M L) they did a very good Pink & a Yellow. If they could do it back in '87-ish then better makers should be able to crack it too.
Cooly - Andover's Yellow Shets & lambswool offerings are nice. Bean's Butter Yellow cotton knit is quite good too - even better after a rinse in weak bleach.
IMVHO
Funny enough -- the yellow oxford in the Boys Department appears to be better than the version being offered elsewhere at 346.
Their boy's stuff is much better than theirs men's now. Period.
Hard to know what to read into Brooks' Men's/Boy's shift.
They obviously view the two areas very differently.
The Men are being steered into a very 'European' style it seems to me.
And the Boys are being given something like (not quite) picture perfect American Traditional style.
Do I detect a flavour of dressing-up for the Lads? Parents kitting out their sons in the 'correct' garb? Garb they no longer wear themselves?
Oh Brooks!
Don't go all Ralph Lauren now!
Don't sell us 'dreams'.
T.L.
(And of course I know that this whole 'aspirational' dream-selling business has been going on for years... High time it was denounced as the work of cynical marketing execs. Some poor suckers might swallow it all one day. What a nightmare!)
England has a lot to answer for...
Horace, You are a Gitman OCBD fan, no? Hugestore is offering a yellow Gitman OCBD now. This is not a usual Gitman instock item, I checked with my local dealer. Looks like a Hugestore exclusive. Maybe testing the waters for future inclusion in the instock program?
More interesting to me is the exclusive pink stripe Gitman OCBD that Hugestore is also offering. Looks nice.
We should all write Christmas lists to him.
If I'm good I should like a Mid-Grey Chambray 3/2 sack please.
Also I'd like to see Press do a nice Cordo 'American' loafer (ie, not a smooth topped Alden style one).
The return of the back button on the properly sized flap pocket OCBD would be good too.
thanks
And hats.
And, yes, indeed that was Gant. 'B.D. Baggies' copied it. So did Landsend's Hyde Park Beefy Oxford OCBDs.
