Bank Holiday 2009

"Dressed right
For a beach fight
But I just can't explain..."

Only my little joke.

Re: Bank Holiday 2009

Ha! Well the local beach was on my agenda today but its pretty grey out there so that idea's been shelved. Shame. A picnic rather than a toe to toe rumble!  So, I'm currently sitting here with my laptop trying to persuade my son to leave his computer game alone and get out of his pj's so at least we can get out and get some some coffee and a bite to eat!

"My jacket's gonna be cut slim and checked
Maybe a touch of seersucker and an open neck"

Possibly.

The seersucker always did sound tasty, though, didn't it?  Maybe Jimmy would have progressed if removed from beneath the light of the full Moon...

Re: Bank Holiday 2009

Oh yes, always partial to seersucker. The actual idea of it used to fascinate me as a little kid (strange but true). My grandmother was in charge of 'Boys Wear' in a department store in those days so visits to her flat were filled with talk of seersucker, rayon, raglan and inverted pleats. All to the sound of her beloved Nat King Cole and Sinatra on the stereogram. I owe her a lot.

Nothing like the correct upbringing.  Mine: Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Satchmo, Ellington and Basie; trips to Hector Powe for the old man's suits; transport caffs; black and white movies.

Early touchstones.  Bit like what Graham Greene said about writers soaking up their influences young.

Re: Bank Holiday 2009

It's funny but I was thinking yesterday as I was mowing the lawn that, back in 1970, on a Bank Holiday Monday (probably not this particular one as I don't think it existed then) I would be doing something rather different.

Sporting a bright red M&S botany wool v neck over a suitable BD and paired with black and white dogtooth trousers and Royals I would have been downing a few pints in a pub in Southend at lunchtime - trying to find that elusive girl that I spotted once at Ilford Palais but never quite got to speak to.  Once again the day would come and go and she would still be just out of reach.....But just dressing and posing was almost enough.  Better than cutting the lawn, what?

Definitely better than cutting the lawn!  (That's a job I allow my wife to do).  Those trousers sound nice (as does the girl).  Don't we have some pictures of you online with a young lady?  Dressed in your 'Squire' finest?

Brideshead, I knew it was you!  And you're far better-looking than Blair ever was!

She looks nice.
