What, he didn't get sloppy seconds then, too, did he?
As for the rest of the talk on this topic I was talking to Jim about the Internet. There are no empires to build here. My comments on America and Europe were based on the majority of writers I've read on these forums. Some are good. Not many. America is especially weak when you consider that this style belongs to them. I rate about a handfull of American writers on this. The figure should be more like 100. Europe has some knowledgeable guys and so has England. But I'm saying some & not all.
Jimmy's ego is a force of nature. The great thing is he says he hasn't got one. After 20 years you get used to him. I always tell people I crashed my van just to get him to shut up.
I think that London comes on strong on this topic because that's London for you. Even the rest of England struggles with London. Always has. For what its worth I'm writing something for Alex Roast just now for his article on IL in London. That he's Dutch means nothing to me. You're either into all this or you aren't no matter where you come from. All I would say is that if you are into it then really be into it for what it is. Scarlet Street (is he a relation?) takes sense on that front and he's an American.
1966 is allright by me. I want to hear him talking on IL in Holland. He's allowed as much national pride as we are. There is a global community into all this but you don't see it on the Internet. All you get is mods and trads on the whole. The real IL is not much to do with either in my opinion.
Your allright & I'm sorry we've crossed swords. I think we all agree anyway. Trying to convert the heathens is a waste of time & always was. And Internet ego trips are pretty pathetic too. Not that's the deal with Jim. He just doesn't see things the way others do. His nose gets in the way.
^ No worries, I like a bit of fireworks.
As for Ivy in the Netherlands - it's definitely here in one form or another. Certain pockets of the social elite are teeming with ocbds, khaki flat fronts and loafers. However I have no idea how conscious of an influence it is, couldn't tell you about that. The subconscious mark Ivy left interests me just as much however, perhaps even more because it coincides with my own story. Before I discovered this forum I didn't even know there was a name for this style. I certainly want to expand on that at some point.

You really would struggle to convert anyone with type of thread. Anyone who may have the slightest intrest in style who unfortunately may have strayed into this forum would soon think twice of looking in again. Sometimes this is too much like a private members club... But with less entertaining anecdotes.
*Ahem*
Remember me?
I'm not sure I want to "Convert The World". What I've always been after is more of a debate than we've had in the past, and I'd say that we were certainly getting there.
Nice stories Paddy - You who used to send me round charity shops and pick me up and put me in skips to get 'stock' for you!
My sympathies to Mr. B., I agree that nobody is interested in me going at it like a jackhammer. And I'm very happy that this unpopular thread can't be blamed on me for once!
Best -
Don't you believe the nasty man. I've got a bad back...

How did this thread get 574 hits?
Come back Paddy, you crowd pleaser!
Forget about plastic sandals, bow ties and yellow raincoats, let's just have a ****ing big bust up everyday! It's what the people want, a bit of toe to toe forum fencing...
Pardon (once again) my ignorance, but did Paddy invent the Harrington or design the first loafer. What's all this forelock tugging semi-adulation? If he was a style guru come ace face from back in the day I apologise. Maybe he has the best barbecues in London or he gets the finest knock off in the capital? But personally I think respect is to be earned...
I know what you mean, Beatnik. I've been away for a bit and this place has turned into a mutual admiration society. Who'd have thought?
