A fun piece of trivia! The yellow color was originally from the linseed oil treatment given to cloth jackets to make them waterproof.

They're fun because they never fail to raise smiles on rainy days. The classic one round these parts is made by Jeantex, reversible to navy. Mine's an ancient Helly Hansen one; there's a pic on page 1 of the 'Ivy League Style For Today' thread.
Completely impractical of course, but you've got to love 'em nonetheless!
Wowwww! Very interesting.Thanks R.A...!
No. You end just as wet as you would if you had no coat. Terrible condensation problems.
I personally have never seen one piece of HH that is of a quality that I would call acceptable, never mind great, which is why the only people I have ever seen in it are smack rats and scrubbers who congregate outside late night corner shops and markets. As for a yellow mac, that doesn't even bare thinking about. Just because you've seen a photo from the 60's or god forbid, GQ doesn't mean you have to be a sheep.

MM, just trying to work out why you've posted that pic! Is that supposed to be your idea of quality gear?
They are nice for knocking around in. The term I know for it is "slicker." I had a reversible blue/yellow (with 2 blue stripes on the arms) until I was about 16 or 17...I wonder where it was from.
The "dress" Burberry raincoat is much more likely to keep you dry but I share some of the soft spots expressed above for the yellow one...even if it might not be of great quality.
I'd put the slicker in the same category as the cotton suits you get at J.Press. They won't last for 50 years like some of my grandfather's wool stuff. They wrinkle easily. They pick up lint. On the navy models the dye on the lapel wears off around the hidden button. But I still like them.
Well they don't half keep the squares guessing...
HH/Quality & Squaresssssssssssssss all in one thread! Now that's ticklish :-)
My mate has one of these: http://www.sixeightsevensix.com/index.php?section=store&page=S8-01_YW
paid full price for it too! He's had to stop wearing it however as it garners some extraordinarily violent rections from some people.

"Slickers" classically were written on by the wearer's friends.
I have long coveted one of these (yes, because of the powerfully addictive 'Take Ivy'), and this morning was in the right place at the right time: Help the Aged. A very reasonable £1.95.
Was in the West End yesterday, New Bond Street to be precise. I walked by Victorinox and in the window they had this version of a Yellow rain coat, which was in a 30% sale.
