Re: the record covers thread

An email of interest -

Two important things happened that brought Waspy "Ivy league" and Jazz musicians closer together.

1. WW2 and the Korean War, on a grand scale Black and white Service men were brought closer together and influences would have rubbed of and the inspirational elements of IL would have appealed to the Black guys the same way that Tommy H was adopted by Urban Rappers in the 90s.

2. For a variety of reasons, creatively and economically big bands (Basie/Ellington/Calloway etc) became less popular in the 50s and smaller formats became more common.
Big bands were expensive and rarely played the campus's, but the smaller formats, trios, quartets etc were cheaper and toured the universities. At these gigs musicians, who were not usually in the company of middle and upper class teenagers mixed in the same circles. This smaller format also brought about the festivals ie Newport est in 1954.

Edit and post if you want.

Re: the record covers thread

Hey Decline, the last thing that concerns me is what somebody's sexuality is. I agree Mike is a card and adds to the colourful mix we have here. I came onto this forum for interesting chat, information and to meet (even virtually) good people, and I think i've done that. I just thought Friday was a bit strange how all this rather personal information came out.
I'm more interested to know what socks folk are wearing rather than there sexual preferences.
