Looks a tad on the warm side, though!!
I think the really fascinating aspect of this is, it's 1964 and he's presumably bucking a trend. I'm not sure, Elvis excepted, how many guys had been seen in a Baracuta - not even McQueen or Sinatra at this point, possibly. And the hair! More unfortunate, then, than it had to be that he threw it all away to become a complete tosser in every possible way: flower child, junkie, supporter of Enoch Powell (or something of the sort, at any rate he got up people's noses for all time for one or two daft remarks) and third runner-up in the 'geography teacher lookalike' competition.
But the 'off-duty astronaut' comment is superb. Anyone seen Caan and the great Robert Duvall in 'Countdown'? I managed about five minutes of it before getting fidgety, so I've no first-hand idea of the clobber they're wearing; but the snippets from 'Soul Stylists' have always stuck in my head and maybe contributed, on blustery March days, to my 'USAAF officer' look, with the severe hair, button-down, mac and cordovan wingtips. It's a 'sour mood' look that gets young mothers removing their toddlers from your path... LOL!!
I love all this. My thanks to Stacey - You're the man.
It's a "Harrington", but it doesn't seem to be a Baracuta Eric is wearing there. Judging by the non elasticated cuffs and the elasticated waist bits it's neither a G4 nor a G9. Could be any old "golfing jacket" no?
Anyhoo, it's a strong look.
That third shot down - Weller as hard mod? No, I'm not being facetious. Was that the image Clapton was trying to get over?
It's certainly not a Baracuta...
In John Platt's rather good 'Yardbirds' book that he did with Dreja & McCarthy (I lost my copy in the post you know, whilst sending it to Chris_H - I mention this merely to show that I send stuff to Chris_H. I'm in with the In Crowd, me! ) Eric is mentioned as being a 'big influence' on the Ivy League look in London & Austins also gets a name check.
I'd say the above was a very In-The-Know London look which went even beyond Austins back then (And is certainly pre-Ivy Shop also). Is it 'Hard Mod'? Or is it even Pre-Hard Mod? Certainly it's Pre- Peanut/Skinhead/Spy Kid from what we know of the 'official' chronology of all that...
'Off Duty Astronaut' is cute - But in context this all this Pre- the big '69 Moonstomp - How iconic were Astronauts in '64? (Dunno...).
Whatever, it's a great look which prefigured so much. I'm a fan.
Are those Sebagos, do you think, under the Levis & the Black socks?

Good call, NSB.
Sadly this didn't last all that long with Eric when you look at the photos...
Mr. Aljazz had very similar loafers in '63 - I need to check the make - He also shopped in Austins.
Just to be contrary I'd say that Clapton's jacket IS a Baracuta - though obviously I can't prove this. The 'acutely' (?) slanted collar (and cuffs) are identical to a vintage Baracuta windcheater that a friend of mine had in the 80's. God knows i coverted that jacket. No idea of its style 'refererence', visibly not a G4 or a G9. I lost out to an identical one on Ebay a few months back which had a load of really detailed photos as part of the auction listing but had been posted in such a way that I couldn't copy them. Shame, as I would have definitely posted them up on the board if I had. Think RS is right about the astronaut bit circa '64 although the American Mercury astronauts had toured the world in 1963 as folk heroes appearing on tv shows, magazine front covers and the like. Their image was fairly widespread. In Japan, Rolex even issued a "Space Dweller" wristwatch in incredibly limited numbers to coincide with the astronauts' press conference in the country. Another thing on my "money no object" wish list!

Was 64 the crossover year? Or was that earlier? There seems to be more going on here than there was with The Who or the Small Faces. Townsend sometimes looked good, but never as good as Watts or Fame, and Hewitt's veneration of Marriott just makes me suspicious (leaving aside the fact he later became a total scruff). I'd like to think there was some jazz/blues influence going into Clapton - I don't suppose Graham Marsh would know, would he? But they all - even Watts - followed the hippy trail more or less. I picked up a book on Clapton in Oxfam, hoping to see pictures like the ones Staceyboy has posted here, only to be knocked sideways by the reek of patchouli oil. Mind you, even old Georgie looked a right lesbian by 67. 'Hard mod'? Maybe, maybe not. 'Mod' of any description? Maybe, maybe not. Without having been there it's all speculation. We need Chris H to comment, I think.
Aye.
Chris_H, Graham Marsh - Those who were there.
Interesting input StaceyMan. I bet you're right!
Eric has some kind of turned back cuff thing going on too, No?
