Nice rise on his jeans too in the top shots...
What would the turn-up be on those jeans - 1.5"?
Yes, the rise is pretty good on those jeans I'd say. Just to backtrack a little I'm pretty certain that Clapton's loafers are of the Florsheim Yuma os Sebago Venetian type. I've tried and failed to turn up the magazine in which I first encountered the photos of Clapton on "RSG". There was an A4 sized colour shot of just him in which you could see the clothing in real detail. The look really made a lasting impression on me. I've just had a look on Ebay to see if the old listing for the 60's Baracuta was still there - sadly its not. It went for around £60 as i recall, Andy. I dropped out at £50 as it would have been a bit on the small side on me anyway. The sleeves were pretty much 'straight down' with little in the way of taper - and I remember from my friend's example that the sleeves were long and needed turning back. The material on the one I handled was of a fairly soft, thin cotton with a very slight 'sheen' to it. Smoother than the outershell of later examples. I've got the Life magazine with McQueen and Neile on the cover and his G9 looks to have that same sort of 'sheen' (waterproofing?) but I could well be wrong!

Any ideas about the knitwear, Mark? Frankly, I don't like it.
Maybe it's that 'sheen' that makes me think of nylon.
£60 seems quite reasonable when you think of the rubbish Baracuta are putting out now. God save us from brands who 're-discover' themselves around the same time they happen across ex-communist countries ripe for outsourcing and joining the EU.
I know a guy who runs a little boutique type place that stocks the knitwear and its ok (feint praise indeed). Quality seems pretty good but not seen where it's manufactured. Very much in the same league as the 'vintage' Farah and Lyle & Scott type cardigans and v necks. The buttondown shirts seem a little pointless to me - basically the same as modern Ben Sherman and Fred Perry but with a different logo. It's like Baracuta have just thought "right, what kind of thing do our young G9 buyers wear? Ok! So we better make those too!" For the same money (or perhaps a little less) Aertex knock-out a similar but IMHO better looking product that actually has a 'shirt' heritage. But I guess that the market must currently be big enough to accomodate them all?

Sad to say Farah and Lyle and Scott are just two of the names of which I am now suspicious, due mainly to their 'casual' connections. I was a bit surprised to see Pringle in J.Simons the other year. Maybe he'd been charity shopping. I was in York last year and found a shop, mainly for skate kids, but absolutely stuffed with Pringle jumpers, some of which are awful. The Nick Faldo ones come immediately to mind. In terms of knitwear, Pendleton did a damn good cardigan with welted and lined pockets. I bought mine on Ebay from a lad up north for about £4, and wear it round the house, to work and out and about. Superb. Alan Paine are also excellent of course, especially the old stuff which seems to have been made here for export to the US. Navy blue and mid-grey cashmere v-necks.
Nice to know there are still things we can rely on.

^That's a great quote. Thanks Chris.

Y'know I always thought that was some kind of weird Carnaby type shirt. It's a windbreaker! Gee whiz I need to pay closer attention...
^ New to me and another bit of Top input from Chris. Eric initially took Mr. Dreja along to Austins with him I believe.
Richard Barnes' little known book "MODS!!!!!!!!" has a great B&W pic of some cropped mods in crewnecks snapped in a shop down Carnaby Street in the 60's. One has shades on with those round black frames that that architect Corby used to sport. Top Pic - I've not seen it for years. Could anymoddybody post it?
Ta, ever so.
On my bicycle this morning I peeped the buttoned sleeve on my old mcGregor windbreaker and thought - Mr Clapton could have been wearing the same jacket on that pic. Buttoned sleeve ends, elasticated side bits. Could have been a London Fog too. Did that old Baracuta you spotted have these same features, Staceyboy?
It would be a difficult look to pull off convincingly in 2009 IMO. Too much dirty water under the bridge if you know what I mean. Here we are, fighting a losing battle against the philistines - the heathens, as Paddy would say - and that might well be a semi-heathen look now. Brilliant for 1964, certainly, but I never go long without thinking of what John Simons has said more than once about 'mods': there are thousands of them. Once upon a time, there was the onlie begetter, but no one now seems to know who he was. I like to think he was a hip young Jew, about seventeen years old, family in the rag trade, with a fine mind and a sharper tongue and always a step ahead of that poseur MacInnes.
Great thread Staceyboy and nice pics Chris! Great work guys.
I just found this post and it's fantastic staceyboy. Great photos, writing. Is that giorgio gomelsky on the left of clapton in the first photo? Im glad to have found a forum where other individuals spend there waking hours pondering such things. great! clapton was also known to favour the light jacket dark trouser look too

BTW, could anyone blow up the pic of Clapton in the natural zip-up-jacket? Did anyone notice the cuff? It seems to me, that it's a turned back cuff... You couldn't do that with a G9 and its elastic knit cuffs ... so this should be the proof...
^ You're right, it's more of a"G4" cuff, with buttons. We noticed that before Hank
