The peaked lapel - why does it just not work?

Very little turns me off a jacket at first glance than this feature.  There's an Andover Shop article being offered on Ebay at the moment, and I wouldn't give it house room.  Is a notched lapel truly the only option in Ivy?  A shawl also does little for me, although I think that may be because I'm not tall enough to carry it off.

Peaked lapels on Sacks have a history in the Ivy look just like all the other things we don't much care for. Art Blakey even wore one with the rest of his Ivy Modernist Jazz rig in one pic I've got.
... Cary Grant sported them too.

They're not for me though, I like things kept simple.

Been thinking about this lately as I keep seeing (or perhaps just noticing more) peak lapels in shops, on people on TV etc and just can't appreciate them at all. Makes me think of Prince Charles and his ugly peak lapelled camel coat.

I can understand the aversion to peak lapels, but you don't like shawl collars? Not even on a nice dinner jacket? One of my favorite looks, and I hardly have a chance to wear it.

I got married in a peak-lapelled, two-button(mother of pearl), side-vented blazer in a very subtle herringbone pattern.  I like it a lot, and it’s very elegant(for a blazer), but I wouldn’t wear it out to dinner... though it was a treat getting hitched in it at ‘Sconset Chapel.
I prefer the stereotypical 3/2, notch-lapelled, hook-vented sack jacket, but I like a little variety now and then.
The only shawl-collared jacket I own is a belted, blackwatch smoking jacket that I pull out around Chrimbo.

I also prefer the 3/2 sack, hook vents aren't a must for me as I have lots of B2 and Southwick that doesn't have the hook vent, though my J. Press stuff does of course and at least one Southwick tweed... After 3/2 my next preference is for a natural-shoulder 2-button darted, I have a beautiful glen check 2-button odd jacket from Chipp, and a nice gray pinstripe suit from H. Freeman... It's always fun to play down the Ivy with a 3/2 sack suit - a point collar and foulard tie, for example - and play it up with a darted 2-button, with an OCBD and emblematic or something...

I can see peaked lapels being nice for a wedding, but I wouldn't do it for everyday... I think one reason they worked well for WFB was because they were so obviously a relic from the 1960s that he kept on wearing into the '70s, he had them and by god he was going to get some use out of them... Now they're too associated with Mad Men, perhaps...

I also like some variety, I like that I don't have the same exact suit or jacket (or shirt) just in different colors, I like that some have 2 buttons on the sleeve, some have 3; some have patch pockets, some don't; some are darted, some not... I like to think that everything in my wardrobe represents me and my approach to clothes equally, you have to have some unifying principle, i.e. yourself, in there... But I wouldn't want my closet to look like I bought it all as a set...
