The more I contemplate it - and this is moving away, I know, from the subject of blazers, for which I apologise in advance - the more seductive Paddy's New York attachment seems. And that's partly (perhaps wholly) because the 'London' associations are missing. Always interesting reading Toffeeman's/Gibson Gardens input IMO because he's from Liverpool and went to London as a young man, thus lacking that capital city perspective and attitude. Maybe the Liverpool-New York links were stronger than the London-New York in some ways?
I just believe it takes more confidence not to strut your stuff with a scowl on your face and a crushed beer can in your hand. For the benefit of the bemused Americans, yes, there has been far too much emphasis upon skinheads etc. - non-Ivy to the nth degree in any meaningful sense of the word. Look at John Simons, with his journeys to New York, his deep interest in modern painting, design and architecture - his erudition, in fact - and then look, if you can bear it, at the would-be Joe 'Awkins of this world. No, Paddy's right: we must focus back on New York, albeit an idealised version 40-plus years ago, else dream our dreams at 2 Russell Street while we may and Rays (boring though it is). Keep taking those important steps backwards! Staceyboy and I began discussing this last spring.

A very promising thread idea indeed.
'Hard Dandy' must be a few years old by now... Things do indeed move on.
