Summer's Here And The Time Is Right...

To flirt with a little 'Preppy' style maybe...

Or maybe even to toy with GTH?

Do you?

How?

Re: Summer's Here And The Time Is Right...

I like the guys shoes in the third image and might wear the last pair of shorts. It's pretty tough for an American who has a serious aversion to all the 80s preppy stereotypes. I am just old enough to remember large parts of the preppy revival around here. I think Jcrew has really ran with this kind of thing. Most of the GTH stuff and the way its combined with other items makes me cringe. A large part of the reason I feel more comfortable posting over here rather than Trad land is because of this kind of stuff. I will admit to loving Madras shirts but they aren't GTH.

Flirting isn't such a bad word at all to use within this context and as always one should avoid being too obvious(ly preppy in this case ). So, adding a bit of colour and some overall playfulness would do the trick nicely. Could be the canvas, or certain other, trainers teamed with maybe some Gant chinos and a Lacoste polo or some fancy sweatshirt from RL for instance. Being very careful when flirting is recommendable though....

I'll wear a simple white or navy Lacoste polo sometimes in this context. I think it works if you avoid the obvious sperry and striped belt thing.

Otter : Take it easy, I'm pre-law.
Boon : I thought you were pre-med.
Otter : What's the difference?

AQG - Would you say that that the glorious Preppy of your youth has been devalued & spoilled with the passage of time? Or do you see an evolution in the style which pleases you? I'm interested in what a Preppy fan's eye view of all this would be.

Thanks -

I stay away from bright-colored stuff, even in summer.  for casual wear, a navy polo shirt or patterned bd (inevitably in blue) with chinos and mocs or Chuck Taylors.  For work, a white bd, dark knit tie, chinos, and a cotton jacket in navy, chambray, pincord, or occasionally very muted madras.

The starkness helps me feel cooler, literally and figuratively.

I'm with Brownshoe and Mr. Raincoat here. I can't do the bright colours thing. I'm a miserable old guffer and the idea of me donning a bright yellow or whatever v- neck fills me with nausea and dread.
Maybe I should start a goth/ivy crossover thread as I do favour black quite a bit.
It's the colour of my soul maaaan!

^ Thirded. Nothing too loud here either. I do favour lighter colours in summer but even those are muted. The beiges, off-whites, khakis, even the light blues and the occasional greens are all a bit drab. Never too bright.

You can wear loud stuff if you play golf. Just got a yellow polo shirt and I have some really bright US tartan ones.

Loud stuff for is tops only. Sober colours only for trousers and shoes.
