He is an interesting guy to be sure. Santa Cruz is also an interesting place. I arrived via redirect from Berkeley because of too many students until my Degree opened up. I came in with the first wave of american Punk Rockers from L.A. It was funny. All the old hippie professors who stayed in university to avoid the draft and wound up avoiding life- a sentiment I am not unsympathetic to- did everything but circle their VW vans like musk oxen. It was both sad and funny to see their hypocrisy kick in as the local 'establishment.'
First day there I'm trying to get the dorm room key out holding my old seabag and a backpack. This idiot in black beret with red star and lenin goatee got in my face telling me it was required to subscribe to THE DAILY WORKER. They had scammed several kids who thought it a campus paper! I said something profound, I think " I killed a few of your comrades during the evacuation." He freaked out, I dropped my kit, grabbed and shoved him down the 3rd story garbage chute into the dumpster. I had the campus provost, police and a women's studies prof in my face screaming expulsion. I finally asked if the regents knew communists were given special access ? So the revolutionary got booted off campus, women's study prof called me a male chauvinist pig and I propositioned her. Next term I moved off campus with the punkers and Jello showed up. My last hurrah was when Angela Davis, now a teacher there came to lecture. She really is a brilliant teacher if a bit bent to a left limp that sends her in sad circles of thought. She talked in my anthropology class taught by a retired episcopalian priest. She told him " that student is dangerous" He laughed and told her " Yes, he's been in the real world to long." Santa Cruz transfer office got me into UCB asap.

Indeed, Mr Rotten, one cannot argue against personal preference.

I "sang" for a grindcore band in high school and college. We had the honor of opening up for the legendary AC at a Tampa gig. This may spoil some of the mystique but their singer Seth was one of the nicest guys I met in the "scene". The funny thing about a lot of the Florida Death Metal bands (Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse etc.) is that most of the guys in the bands were either video game nerds or rednecks. Sometimes both! After meeting a lot of them I was really let down by the lack of "evil". Most of them were also pretty decent guys to talk to.
I am learning that music preferences do not always come with a standard uniform.
I was also surprised the other day to hear people in the office talking about the band New Order. They were dressed for work and were just ordinary middle-aged blokes. I sort of assumed music would be left behind with their youth.
Old people at concerts is another eye opener.
