If you are talking about 'street style' and fashion innovation in general the world still takes it's leads from London and Britain. But with someone in full on Ivy gear, it doesn't quite look right on the streets of dear old Blighty. Same as mods look bizarre in California or Japanese Rockabillies.
That's why it's so important for folk to mix and adapt their own style in this country. Otherwise you might as well just walk down Kilburn High Road in a full western outfit twirling a lassoo...
Funnily enough the European capitals seem more tolerant of often-outrageous dress code violations. The example of the cowboy in Kilburn High Road has no doubt been done.
Londoners might hurl the odd witty riposte to someone's dress sense but on the whole tolerance has long been the key.
Wearing a bowler hat in certain parts of Belfast or Glasgow on July 12th might, however, raise more than an eyebrow.
soul on, people.
Not so much about tolerance Sole Brother. Just what looks right. Maybe some cats can get away with looking like they have just stepped out of a New England Sebago catalogue shoot when they are wandering through Central Newcastle or Birmingham Bull Ring. But I wouldn't feel right.
Please don't mention those hideous orange fellows in sashes and bowlers please, i've just eaten...
What with the current/apparent Americana being in vogue thing in the UK and the related comments from NSB and Tom I thought we could maybe revive this topic. I'm not that knowledgeable on Americana ( or workwear ) but I am interested in the casual side of people's wardrobes and the mixing of certain garments with IL style, albeit perhaps only on a personal basis ( the establishing of that relation between the two that is ).
Tom mentioned he was 'just an American guy wearing casual clothes' in the pics he posted whilst 1966 noticed the gear he wore was still of a certain classic nature. I find that the most fascinating aspect, the thoughtful attitude behind all of this I mean.
So, anymore thoughts on that please, gents ?
I'm out of my depth when it comes to saying sensible things about NYC. However I'd like to do a thing on this "boiling down the regular guy get-up to the essence". Tom does just that judging by his spare time pics and to me that's pretty profound. Without trying to intellectualize his clobber on any given saturday, I think there is a lot to be said about the ideal of - give it a name - "sublime normality". I'd like to write about the way I see this and strive for it, but I'd need some more time and another thread.
