I used to frequent Nic Naks as a young casual back in the early 80s. For a time, it was the shop for jeans & cords and possibly even kickers if my memory serves me right.
Your right Chipie was located in the side alley off Long Acre, when they closed in the early 90s they sold off everything. I bought a couple of statues from the store and still have them. One is of two kids in clothing from the 40's trying on shoes with the shoemaker standing by. The other was a statue of a display bust of a woman wothout the head wearing a girdle (I gave it to my mum). As for Nic-Nac I bought a Chipie (Display) statue from them of a an old man wearing a jean jacket, jeams, a back puffy cap, sittling on a wall with a shovel. Another statue which was very rare and I bought it from the Chipie Wholesaler in Lexington Street was a Chipie Sioux Indian, which stands about 2 feet tall and is unbelievable in detail and they only made 52. As for C17 Cidisept? (I'm not sure its been such a long time) was a small statue of a cowboy sitting in an armchair sipping a beer. All the best, Chris
I've got a Cole Hann Duck with its head still on!
Who is that' Bitterest Pill' chap who used to park his Vespa by Ted Baker?
I'd like to shake his cyber hand too...
White Vespa, yeah I know him, Early Paul Weller haircut. He's still working for Ted in Floral Street.
the chipie shop on kings rd was great, i coveted the red + cream armchairs just inside the door. some saturdays it was queue to get in, queue for changing rooms and queue to pay, even though the prices made non afficionados claim that "they must have seen you coming" (yawn). the flagship chipie shop in paris was way cheaper, although they did accuse me of shoplifting in there once! i had to show them a dry cleaning tag inside the trousers i was wearing, and they gave me a baseball cap as an apology. the best jeans i ever had were undied chipie invincibles, with the red diagonal band on the back right pocket. i knew i needed to go on a diet when the waistband button popped off- and killed someone. on holiday in majorca in 88 a northern chappie asked if i would sell him one of my chipie t shirts for £50, which i declined. towards the end of the trip i saw him in the distance and ran after him asking if he was still buying, and he was, but knocked me down to 6,000 pesetas (£30) and he went off happier than felicity kendall's washing machine.
This is the period in which I worked in Boy and Johnsons on the Kings Road. I remember all the casuals got into all the labels you've talked about here. Levis chinos were big and Verte Valle shirts. It was a horrible mish mash Ivy yobbo look that I hated at the time.
I also did a stint in Ken Market at Rock a Chas selling zoot suits. Remember the Flip stores on Long Acre and Kings Road when you could get quality American clothing? Ah happy days...
