This caught my eye:

It's the old 'But is it Trad?' problem. The cart, as ever, put before the horse. Jovan is my favourite here as he almosts asks the questions they can't ask - What's 'Trad' anyway? What is it based on? What does it mean?
Definitions & stylistic terms do actually matter. They have meanings. No?

I think the most telling thing about that forum now is how certain types come asking those questions and just want a uniform. You can see certain posters over there absorb that whole uh curriculum and just paint by numbers. It goes back to some of CM/ISRs criticisms of Mod. Same type of thing. Some people want to be given a uniform. It's so odd to see a guy.. comes to forum, reads through the forum, goes out and buys the gear. He then realizes that if he accepts the true religion he can graduate to the elite curriculum forum. The forum that does not discuss what is or isn't trad. The word is hardly mentioned there. Is it because they have moved on past it or they are just that adept at the uniform? The most ridiculous thing I have ever seen on Andy is "I just know it when I see it". I would really like to know how some of them feel about adopting a uniform based on clever trolling. Are they in denial? Do they not care? Are they that convinced that Trad as the forum defines really is the Ivy look..As much as I appreciate a lot of the information I have gleaned from the posts over there, it's gets pretty terrifying to contemplate what it says about people. Sorry to go off on a tangent RS, and I know it's not what you were speaking about directly but that thread is just a reminder of how odd that whole business is.

Definitions matter only in the sense that one should know about the 'rules' in order to be able to break them properly, if one so desires. If one doesn't want to cross any possible self imposed boundaries that's fine too. Inflicting stylistic rules on others is always wrong. Lead by example only, as someone said.....
This is what I was getting at in my little rant. I think there is a huge difference in self imposed boundaries and adopting a uniform. A lot of the guys on clothes forums have all kinds of money to blow on clothes. Could you imagine how well they could of done for themselves if they learned what styles where really about and then came up with their own thing based on the styles they felt some connection to for whatever reasons. It's a human problem I guess but why would people just want to follow what someone else is doing.
Maybe it a hard question to anwer as differnt people will have difernt veiws,
ask 100 people what there think of MP's (for example) and I bet your get loads of differnt answers

Word.
And after our Sainted Pal came & went life real goes on. Charlie Davidson remains with us and Oxford cloth is still a joy to wear.
You can't touch the old American look really. You can give it new names & re-brand it & spin it & make up anything you want about it, but the REAL style will still go on without you. And the real style will always look at your paltry, vainglorious, self serving, ignoble little online efforts and smile to itself.
None of my classic Brooks OCBD are 'Trad'. How could they be?
