Not solids only but medium or dark backdrops with small neat designs or even stripes. I wanted to see how forumers felt about this color tie with a suit and shirt. Are there reasons not to wear one with a navy or charcoal suit and a white or blue shirt?
Thanks for any comments.
I bought a beautiful dark browm charvet tie with small blue squares on it this summer and it is on of my favorite ties. I personally do not like brown ties with navy though.

I have been seen wearing a chocolate necktie that has light blue dots, a blue end on end shirt, gray sharkskin suit and brown semi-brogues.

I've got a few brown ties, and I've always felt that one has to have a certain taste and style to pull them off. Alas, I think I lack this taste and style. They never seem to "work" just right.....
It is a bigger color in Italy than in England.
I like brown with a grey suit, though I generally match my tie to my shirt and not my suit.

that was kind of my point, pretty much any tie goes with a white shirt. So, I would assume in that case your phlosophy chages frm trying to match the shirt. Therefore, when wearing a white shirt do you adopt the aforementioned philosphy of working the tie with the suit rather than with the shirt as you do when you wear patterned or colored shirts.
love the navy tie with a charcoal suit and love the navy suit, white shirt, orange tie. I am quite fond of the navy/white/orange combination but it has to be a the right orange tie. IMO, orange ties either look either spectacular or dreadful, but i like them. FNB, I find your philosphy on ties very interesting and similar to what my viewpoint has been evolving into. Texture is something that I am not knowledgable on yet, but it is something i hope to explore more in the future in regards to ties. I think most american men view the tie as its own entity, rather than as a piece of an outfit. This can result in some horrible looking situations. ITs like a women's handbags where it has nothing to do with the rest of her outfit and it looks terrible.

I would only wear brown ties with a brown suit or sport jacket, but certainly the can be worn with a blue, yellow or probably even a pink shirt.
Sorry, but I just don't think a brown tie goes with a grey or navy suit, but chacun a son gout.
I placed a solid dark brown square end knit with a medium gray flannel suit. Didn't look quite right. Didn't have the historical appeal of, say, a black knit tie and pink bd shirt with this ensemble.
Will's outfit picks up a secondary color (the blue in the shirt and tie) and seems attractive for that reason.
