Re: Jack Klugman: Ivy Icon

I think Staceyboy might have access to some interesting images.  He was telling me about Klugman's Ivy credentials last spring.  I do like that red jumper: the overall effect: off-duty golfer, Mark?

The cap is very Andover or O'Connell's.

I love Jack 'don't call me the poor man's Matthau' Klugman. The TV 'Odd Couple' is is greatly under-rated. And what would afternoon telly be without 'Quincy'.

Agreed.

I love the TV O.C. and Quincy wears the G9 very well.

Re: Jack Klugman: Ivy Icon

Off duty, over 50, this might be the way to go:  Grumpy Old Man chic as opposed to grousing English OAP shabbiness.  So:  Ivy suits, shirts, repps and wingtips for those vital 'in the public eye' moments, slouchy cardigans, polo shirts, rumpled khakis and Jack Purcell for pushing a trolley round the supermarket.  Chosen with care and an eye for interesting colour combinations this would at least ensure that we recognise one another as we wearily converge on Soho Square to feed crumbs to the birds...

We then hold a G9 competition, Staceyboy winning hands down because he has at last found a Baracuta with a metal zipper...

^ Another very nice thought.

The Beatnick and I will come down from our flat not too far from the Heath and say Hello.

^ A good idea indeed. I must dig out the Klugman stills I have and get them up on the site. I do love his style in Quincy. I think I'm right in saying that the show had a tie-in with McGregor Sportswear (??) to provide Quincy's clothes - they get a mention on the closing credits. I'll need to double check the brand by catching an episode soon on day time tv!

Mention of the Odd Couple TV spinoff has caused me to meditate on the TV and film career of Garry Marshall. Has anyone ever worn so many hats so successfully? I could watch his acting cameo in Lost In America endlessly.

Who styled Columbo? That's my next  look. "Would you sign an autograph for my wife sir?. She's a big fan... Oh, and just one more question..."
You heard the 'next big thing' prediction here first.

Re: Jack Klugman: Ivy Icon

Watched an episode of Quincy this morning, Klugman looked great in every scene, breezy casual outfits or tweed suit.

That was a golden era of TV. Quincy was a bit of a sleaze though. Easily distracted by young chicks. He needed to focus on the cadavers.

Petrocelli was my favourite. Mid 70s and I recall no decent clothing, but he was a good guy and he never lost a case.

some sort of banal legitimacy

Re: Jack Klugman: Ivy Icon

Picked up the Petrocelli complete series DVD last year. Loved the show in the 70's, hadn't seen it since. Holds up pretty well so far. Clothes are nothing special as you say, but he does rise above temptations of the flesh. Recently saw an episode where a female witness in a bikini leers at him while dripping wet, but he refuses both her insinuations and invitations.

Don't know if you can really blame Quince though; when a man dons a Van Heusen windbreaker, the world of earthly pleasures offers itself up to him.

I used to enjoy a series called 'Baretta', which began the year before I left school, 1975.  Haven't seen it since.  Anyone remember it and its slightly cheesy theme song?
