I'm liking this thread.
First off, 66 is right, Jim you might have been online talking about this shit early on, but like you keep saying online is just "showbiz", Shit you know more about USA makes than me, great and good for you. But, and its an important but, why am I and others like me here. Fuck all to do with you, Harris, AAAC, or Trad. I found this site coz of my interest in Ivy style, I was searching for others. Ok you lot were here before me, online. You have a more obsessive nature than me about USA makes, but fuck I've had knowledge of this style and dressed in it or approximations of it for a long while now. Fuck all to do with you, London (well maybe some influence I guess), and the rest of the web. This is shit I've known about and dressed in some form or other from the late 70's. Maybe I'm more focused with it now.
Yes I definately think its is as kosher as Saville Row. Yes I think that Stanley Blacker ad is fucking great, that model could turn me dressed like that! But this whole shit of (and I know I've just done some of this) back in the day all we had was someone who went to New York and got so and so from wherever, is as bad as the so called "backcombed" buffoons on Modculture. I've been hearing that "I suffered for my dress style" for fucking years now. Yes I've even said that shit, and still do at times to people who don't know jack about any of this. But and again its an important but, when guys are on here looking to learn more, (sure the commemt about the jkt being too "full" seemed to me to be a bit, well, strange as that is the look of a sack)! then surely members on here can help out, like you guys had mentors. I've picked this shit up for myself, as have a lot of others on here. But most of us are in our 40's and old enough to weather each others shit. Fuck don't attack the younger ones who want to know more, and give them the "war" stories. Yes it was different for us in our late 30's and 40's and older. We did learn about things in a more organic way. We never had the net. It was the way it was, good or bad, and we will all probably say it was good. Its different now. Simple as. We might never agree with it, but thats the way it is. I applaud the obsessives and yet they are also (to me) the ones who can be the most off putting.
Ivy for everyone. Yes? So either embrace that or decide to be eletist. You can't have it both ways.

lotsa contradictions with Russell's online enterprise. He can be a populist or an elitist, depending on which suits his agenda at the moment. he wants to be a troll but also wants a sense of community. but mostly it's not about Ivy at all but his own egomania and need to tell others he controls the internet
He says the clothes are "just clothes" but clearly they're much more to him. his whole idenitty is wrapped up in them (remember the 'how deep is your love' thread?). simple objects like shirts and pants have huge symbolic importance for him, as they are the instruments of his Ivy purist/hardline Fantasyland. It's all record albums and movies and symbolic clohtes. none of it's grounded in real American life. the only reality is in the shared company of other fantasists
and last he sez over and over that the web don't matter, but it clearly matters to him, or he wouldn't obsessively post the same shit every day for five years.
he's the dr. evil of the web, pretty much a self-caricature at this point.
not surprised the crew is starting to mutiny.
Toothless argument. Who cares what a troll thinks of our very own troll/moderator. I am sure everyone here can and has formed their own opinions about all this business without your words of wisdom. The fact is the guy knows his Ivy clothes, he knows his jazz, and that is all I care about. Win, lose, or draw he drives this board. This forum still has more pertinent content in its archives than all the the Ivy Style websites, curriculum guides for the middle class middle aged American striver, and trend hopping Americana blogs combined. Any active member of this forum that complains about the forum has earned the right by participation. What gives you the fucking right?
EDIT: Jim Beam strikes again. Sorry folks.

I've never questioned your achievements here Jim Russell. I credit you with them. Just challenging some of the way business is done on here, thats all.
Cake and eat it?
Well maybe we can. I just get a bit fed up with I suffered for my art. But you know what, the next day i might just espouse that. Fucking mood swings are getting worse, i really must go back to my psychiatrist.
I just think its a shame when some of the younger guys are put off. But then again I don't wanna patronise them, they can make choices and stick up for them selves.
I'm just a bleedin heart liberal......with mood swings.

Yeah - Let's 'ave it all!
Older guys also get put off too you know. Swings & roundabouts.
/\ Yeah tell me about it, I've clearly been put off a few times.
More hardcore on here, yeah great bring em on. I for one (believe it or not) welcome hearing from anyone who has some interest in all this. Hardcore or curious (see here come my liberal ways again, now I'm off to get my copy of The Guardian!)
Is JS still selling some Town issues?
I see what you mean. I couldn't help it.
Then again it could just be the way these jackets worked on their bodily quirks. Perhaps Mr boxer had a collapsed chest and this chap had considerable moobs. What do we know.
