Thrifting on the Borderline...

Now that my daughter is leaving home, her Ebay account has disappeared - much to my wife's relief.  I shall miss the endless trawling, but being forced back into full-time thrifting might not be such a bad thing.
You never know quite what you're going to come up with, by haunting the charity and 'retro' shops, although I have been known to blitz those in Nottingham and return home with just an ancient knitted tie.
'Borderline', to me, is all right but not exactly 'Ivy League'.  Not if we're being narrow and specific.  This morning, for instance, I picked up a pale blue Smedley cardigan - sea island cotton - for £6.99 (together with a Coltrane CD and a nice book on 'Seaside Architecture': piers and the like).  I intend to wear it in France in a couple of weeks time.  These came from the local Oxfam, which was also offering Pringle, Jaeger, Hodgson (nice but too big for me) and Fred Perry.  Now, I have to admit to being - possibly for no good reason - slightly dubious about Smedley.  Jeff Garrett was telling me the shop once stocked it for a bit, but seemed unimpressed - did it fail to sell well?  To me it's a bit, well, 'mod', hence 'borderline'.  Having said that I do rather wish I still had a nice dark green Smedley polo shirt that must have set me back the best part of £3...
Alex Roest would probably tell me I'm being too picky - or something.  Anyway, connect this posting to the one on 'Quality'.  Grenfell, Burberrys', Viyella and Alan Paine (say) could all be classified as 'Borderline'.  And yet...

Is it just me?
